Patrick Jane He has a playful and arrogant personality and a tendency to ignore authority, often using unorthodox methods, which were met with disapproval from his coworkers. Jane is considered to be the best detective in California, on par with Sherlock Holmes. He is capable of incredible feats of observation and induction and although he says that he is not psychic, some people maintain that he must be. Jane is not afraid of mocking others although after the death of his wife and daughter he is more cautious and knows that his actions can have terrible consequences. Although he generally exhibits a cheerful demeanor, Jane suffers an enormous sense of guilt for the death of his wife and daughter, as well as a fierce determination to kill Red John, the serial killer who murdered them. Rebecca tells Jane that Massacre had agreed to give the case back to Jane because Red John "knows he will make Jane happy." This “cause and effect explanation” creates more guilt for Jane. Despite her grudge against Red John, Jane resists handling weapons except in extreme circumstances, most notably when she saved Lisbon with a shotgun against a man who could have given her information about Red John. Jane is a master of manipulation, a trait he also possessed by his enemy Red John. She is obsessed with Red John, and it has become clear, Red John is obsessed with him. As Bret Stiles said, "It's kind of love, Patrick." Jane forms few personal accessories for fear of losing more loved ones. There is a close friendship and an allusion-in romantic attraction between him and Lisbon. Jane is aware that his attachment to Lisbon could become a target for Red John. Jane is a master of manipulation, a trait she also possessed by her enemy Red John. She is obsessed with Red John, and it has become clear, Red John is obsessed with him.
