Snape is not a light magician, but he was not a dark wizard. He invented spells, at least one of which could easily kill a person. He could summon a bodily Patronus. An outstanding potion maker, improved the compositions and methods of preparing potions. A talented and very strong occlumenist. An outstanding wizard who is excellent at magic. In this respect, he was no worse than Bellatrix Lestrange and Antonin Dolokhov. The creator of new spells. A wizard who could move through the air without any vehicle (except for Snape, only Voldemort demonstrated this skill). He owned legilimency.

A man who had a clear logical mind (few wizards can boast of this[10]).A prudent strategist, a skillful tactician. A person who is able to perfectly hide his feelings if it is necessary for the case. A good psychologist. At least finding the "pain point" of the interlocutor for Snape does not seem particularly difficult.

Snape, in need of self-affirmation, joins the death eaters to gain some kind of recognition. This is how he develops a paranoid personality type. Many paranoids suffered in childhood from the fact that their sense of self-power was constantly undermined. They were suppressed and humiliated.
