Applejack is a brave, reliable, strong, mature and hardworking pony, although she stubbornly tries to do everything on her own. During harvest season, she insisted on harvesting the annual apple harvest herself while her brother Big Mackintosh recovered from injury. Big Mac doubted her ability to complete the seemingly insurmountable task of picking apples from every tree in the orchard, of which there are hundreds, but Applejack was determined. After she stopped an out-of-control herd of cows that was heading into Ponyville, the townspeople held a ceremony in her honor, where her close friends celebrated her willingness to help. She received her trophy without much show-off and returned to her harvest. She was exhausted, but continued to kick trees and repeatedly refused Twilight Sparkle's numerous offers of help. She finally fainted at the sight of the many apple trees she still had to collect and finally, forgetting her pride, accepted help from her friends. Since then, she has been happy to accept help from her friends.

Applejack speaks with a South American accent, a strong southern drawl similar to the accents of people living in the southwestern Missouri and Oklahoma Ozarks, where apple orchards abound. She often calls her friends and family "sugar cubes" as a sign of affection. She is not afraid to get dirty and may not practice any proper eating etiquette, much to Rarity's dismay. She can walk around the house with dirty hooves, eat with her mouth open, slurp and burp, and also does not bother to make the bed. She feels uncomfortable at formal dinners because she does not know how to eat certain dishes correctly and which dish is “correct” to eat first. Applejack is not offended when Rarity calls the competition held at the apple farm "uncouth." Applejack sometimes gives Rarity advice on how to get along with her younger sister Sweetie Belle, using her example with Apple Bloom. Rarity gratefully accepts this advice. Applejack doesn't like "girly" or "trendy" things.
