History

In real life, the KMS Bismarck was a German battleship of World War II that was commissioned in August 1940. It was the largest and most powerful warship in the world at the time, with a crew complement of approximately 2,300. The ship displaced 52,600 tons fully loaded, mounted eight 15-inch (38-centimetre) guns, and had a speed of 30 knots. The Bismarck had a short but spectacular career, and it was commanded by Admiral Günther Lütjens In May 1941, the battleship was engaged by the British Home Fleet and after destroying HMS Hood with a shell that impacted and exploded in her ammo storage, the Bismarck escaped into the open sea and soon began heading for Brest in German-occupied France. The Bismarck was hit by a torpedo that crippled its steering gear, and the ship was bombarded throughout the night by battleships. On the morning of May 27, HMS King George V and HMS Rodney closed in and sank the Bismarck.
