Background: Matt is not completely blind, he can see things very close but he sees everything red and on fire. Matt Murdock was raised solely by his father, Jonathan Murdock, a boxer nicknamed Fighting Jack. They both lived in Hell's Kitchen, a neighborhood in Manhattan, New York. Jack wanted his son to be more successful than him, so he forced Matt to study constantly, instead of playing sports and playing with the rest of the children in his neighborhood. The father hoped that Matt would become a doctor or a lawyer, and not an "uneducated dog" like he was. Because Matt did not play sports or risk outdoor activities, the neighborhood children began to make fun of Matt by calling him "Daredevil", a nickname that years later he would use as a night watchman. However, Matt took out his frustrations by secretly training at his father's gym. One day during his teenage years, young Matt Murdock tried to stop a truck from hitting a blind man by pushing the man out of the way. He managed to save it, but was exposed to radioactive chemicals carried by the vehicle, which had crashed trying to avoid the accident. An isotope spilled out, hitting Matt in the face and causing his trademark blindness. While recovering in the hospital, Matt discovered that, due to direct exposure to the chemicals, his hearing, smell, taste and touch were amplified to superhuman degrees. He also developed "echolocation" which formed a mental image of his surroundings. While in the hospital, Matt was visited by a nun wearing a gold cross. Turning out to be Matt's mother, whom Matt had long believed dead, he would one day find her, "Maggie", who lived as a nun. Matt would not know who or what this woman was for many years.

A few months later he met a man who was a ninja master named Stick (a martial arts master) from whom he received training. He taught him how to take advantage of his heightened senses and trained him as a fighter honing his skills in acrobatics and martial arts. He later mastered his heightened senses and became a formidable fighter. Meanwhile, Jack Murdock was desperate for a fight. Reluctantly, he teamed up with a crooked wrestling promoter known as the "Fixer." Fixer forced Jack to be a heavyweight contender, just to have a dip. Jack refused and won his fight. Later that night, Jack Murdock was shot dead by Fixer and his men. Now an orphan, Matt searched for his father's killers. He finally found the Fixer's gang and punished them severely. He chased and confronted the Fixer, who pulled a gun on Matt. Before he could fire, Roscoe suffered a heart attack and died. Matt tracked down Angelo, the last man responsible for his father's death. He found him in a brothel. Matt confronted him, but was attacked by the women who worked there. Matt knocked one of the women out of the window and thought she was dead (she would later return as Mary Typhoid). He fled horrified by what he had done. He went looking for Stick, but had abandoned him because of his actions. Matt continued studying and entered Columbia Law School. At Columbia, Matt met and fell in love with Elektra Natchios. It was a first love for both of us. When Elektra's father was accidentally killed by the police, she withdrew from the world and Matt. Matt earned his law degree and landed a job at a major law firm. He returned to Hell's Kitchen and his father's old gym. Over time Matt would graduate with a J.D. at the top of his class despite his double life.

Matt continued in the gym which helped him hone his boxing and wrestling skills, which became key for him, along with his acrobatic ability against large groups of bullies he had to engage. It was also around this time that he was developed with the use of his signature weapon, Billy Club. He is also shown using a tire as a sling shot with a car engine, as the ammunition he uses to stop a truck. His abilities to use acrobatics to dodge bullets and heightened reflexes to swat bullets were also evident at the time where he decided to fight crime as Daredevil. After graduation, Matt and Foogy would start their own law business "Nelson & Murdock" and hire a beautiful young blonde secretary named Karen Page, to whom men are attracted.
