Charles Xavier was a mutant who could read minds and project his ideas into people's minds. As a child, Charles met the mutant orphan Raven Darkholm, who was able to accept the appearance of other people and was engaged in theft. Charles, delighted to have met a child as gifted as himself, offered Raven to live at home, to which she gladly agreed. Raven soon became Charles's foster sister, and they were very friendly.

Later, wheelchair-bound Charles returned to his mansion, where he founded a school for gifted teenagers. He broke up with Moira, erasing her memory of himself. At school, Xavier trained mutants who were supposed to be part of the X-Men team.
