Description.
Frisk is a character from Undertale, the playable character and the protagonist. He is the eighth human to fall underground, and must embark on a journey to return to the surface, either peacefully, neutrally or genocidally. Frisk is a character with no defined personality that relies solely on the player's choice. She can act in caring, empathetic, and kind ways in the Pacifist and True Pacifist routes, in sociopathic, selfish, and mean ways in the Genocidal route, and a balance between the two in the Neutral route. Frisk is a genderless character based solely on player representation. Her true name is revealed in the True Pacifist route.
Appearance.
Frisk has the appearance of a 14-year-old girl. Her skin tone is yellow and she wears a long-sleeved blue shirt with two purple stripes on her chest, blue pants, and dark brown shoes. Frisk has short, straight brown hair that reaches her neck. She always has a neutral expression without any emotion. Frisk doesn't show much expression in the Underground, however, she is constantly described by the other characters depending on her actions. Other characters will see Frisk as a disturbing, cold person and as a true monster when she plays the genocidal route, some even seeing her as an Inhuman person.
Personality.
Frisk's personality is completely ambiguous, perfect for the player to project any of their traits through their actions and almost non-existent dialogue. During Sans' trial, it is mentioned that Frisk's actions change during each route he follows depending on how much LOVE he has accumulated in his little odyssey. Frisk often talks to other characters and even acts friendly towards them. Throughout their adventure, Frisk often talks to various characters in important encounters and even obeys their requests, but the exact dialogue is only shown when the game offers multiple dialogue options, making it clear that Frisk only speaks when necessary.
Skills.
Frisk's determination grants her the power to save games, heal at save points, and respawn at the last place she was after death, which is where her soul breaks down. Her power came about when Frisk first woke up in the Ruins, possibly after her soul worked with Chara, the Fallen Human. Frisk can reload the save file to repeat the events that occur afterwards, but the characters' memories are not completely erased unless a True Reset occurs or after completing the Genocidal Route. After the end of the True Pacifist Route, Flowey's dialogue implies that Frisk is not the being manipulating the save files, but rather someone who appears to be above it. Frisk can also heal their health in the middle of battles with food, and other things that they grab around or manage to buy, their heart which is the red human soul is what they use to fight monsters and attack them with a kind of cut.
History.
After falling into the Underground, Toriel and Asgore take her in as their own daughter, and treat her with respect just like their biological son, Asriel. Chara and Asriel become very good friends. The monsters talk about how Chara filled the Underground with hope, as the soul of humans is too powerful. One day, Chara became seriously ill, and as a final wish he asked to see the Golden Flowers of his village. As he died, Asriel absorbed his human soul, and carried his body across the barrier to the human village, where he was attacked by the villagers. It is later revealed that this was a plan devised by Chara, to poison himself with the flowers, have Asriel absorb his soul, and collect 7 human souls to destroy the barrier. Whether the reasons for carrying out this plan were benevolent or of evil intent is unknown; Asriel mentions that it was Chara who wanted to destroy the villagers when they began attacking them and it was Asriel who resisted and retracted this act. Chara's body was originally placed in the basement of the castle, where the bodies of other humans would later be placed. Toriel, at some point, takes Chara's body to the Ruins to give it a proper burial. Later it was when Frisk wanted to climb the mountains and fell into the ruins, her body functioning with Chara's when falling into the same flowers where she buried herself, her soul functioning with Frisk's and feeding on energy every time she kills a monster, to the point of leaving her body and not needing anyone's help to finish off all the monsters and humanity, since the humans locked up the monsters because of a war, when before they lived in company. The soul of a human is much stronger than that of an underground monster, so only a human soul can break through the barrier, and with another 7 it can be broken.
History. (2)
When the player gets a Game Over, Asgore's voice can be heard saying "keep your resolve." The messages heard at this point are identical to the ones Asgore tells "Chara" when he was in bed before he died. Frisk can also hear Chara's name in their dreams. At one point in the story, if the player sleeps in their bed at Toriel's house, Asgore's voice can be heard pleading "Chara, please... Wake up! You are the future of humans and monsters." When the player first falls into the Garbage Dump, Asriel's voice can be heard speaking to Chara upon first encountering him, though the message is not directed directly at her. When the player dies, he can revive again and again with the starting point he saved, which is basically like going back in time. Neutral Route. After falling, Frisk meets Flowey the Flower again, who tricks her into trying to kill her after she pretends to offer him "honest advice." Toriel appears and intervenes by hitting Flowey with fire magic and serving as his guide to the Ruins. At the end of some long hallways full of traps, Toriel asks Frisk to wait for her to return since she has things to do, and to be sure of it, Toriel gives Frisk a cell phone so they can call her whenever necessary. Frisk solves the remaining puzzles in the Ruins and eventually reaches Toriel's house. Frisk quickly asks Toriel "how to get out of the RUINS", prompting Toriel to attempt to destroy the way out of the ruins. Toriel then battles Frisk to prove to her if she can survive. Upon leaving, Frisk meets up with Sans and Papyrus in the Snowdin Forest. Frisk quickly learns that the brothers set up traps and puzzles in an attempt to capture some human. After passing through Snowdin, Papyrus battles Frisk.
History. (3)
Frisk encounters Undyne, the head of the Royal Guard, several times, as she chases Frisk around Waterfall. Monster Kid often saves Frisk from Undyne by accident because he is too excited to watch Undyne fight. After a lengthy chase, Undyne destroys a bridge Frisk is standing on, and Frisk falls into the dumpster, where he recalls some dialogue from the first human to fall underground before getting up. At the Dump, Mad Dummy fights Frisk after accusing him of mistreating his cousin, Dummy, in the Ruins when Toriel asked him to talk to her. At the end of Waterfall, Undyne fights Frisk after she gives an abbreviated monologue on top of a cliff. This is when Alphys first appears, having created all the traps in Hotland in an attempt to win Frisk's affection. Before Mettaton EX appears and battles Frisk. Finally, Frisk passes through New Home, the capital of the Underground, where they learn the history of Asgore and Toriel's children through the monsters they pass by. Sans judges Frisk in the Final Corridor and explains the true meaning of LOVE and EXP, emphasizing Frisk's importance in the fate of the world. It is then that Frisk enters the Throne Room and finds Asgore, who attempts to make small talk, only to realize his true destiny and Frisk's intentions to leave the Underground. The two walk towards the Barrier and Asgore gives Frisk one last chance to leave before they fight.
History. (4)
Asgore shows the six collected human souls just before the fight, preparing the containment process after the battle. Just before the fight begins, Asgore destroys the SORRY button with his trident, making it impossible to escape or run away. At the end of the fight, Frisk can choose whether to spare or kill Asgore. Regardless of the choice, Flowey appears and destroys Asgore's soul and takes the human SOULS to proceed to close or restart the game.
History. (5)
After re-opening the game, Frisk discovers that Flowey has saved his own game in the SAVE file, having gained the power to do so with human souls. Upon loading Flowey's game, Frisk is confronted by a powered-up Flowey with a very scary and strange appearance, which they resolve to confront as soon as possible. Frisk calls for help several times, until finally the stolen souls begin to rebel, healing Frisk and then weakening Flowey, leaving him vulnerable to utter defeat. After Frisk manages to reduce Flowey's HP to 0, the human souls remove his ability to SAVE or LOAD, and then finish him off. After this, there is the option to kill or spare Flowey, who is in a serious and pitiful state before leaving the underground and returning to the surface and thus ending his journey. To complete the True Pacifist Route, Frisk must have first completed the Neutral Route and if Frisk has completed the Neutral Route without gaining EXP or LV (without killing anyone). During the genocidal route, Frisk mercilessly and remorselessly kills all the inhabitants of the underground world in a ruthless manner and in one fell swoop. The fights are done in turns, which is when he kills them all and still, they do not stop believing in the human, especially Toriel and Papyrus. Meanwhile, the other inhabitants hide and stay away from Frisk, which gives a depressing aura when seeing everything so empty and their hands full of dust (When monsters die they fade into dust). It is finally when Frisk enters the last room where he meets Sans, who judges him in a kind of death row or final corridor, for the sins that the human committed and tells him; "Children like you must burn in hell." and decides to try to kill him while telling him that he does not care about anything anymore since anyway, everything will be reset.
History. (6)
This is when Chara makes his only physical appearance, which is at the end of the Genocide Route. Chara appears to address the player directly. She kindly states that she was revived thanks to the stats Frisk gained every time they killed a monster and boosted her resolve, as well as the power of her reincarnation itself. Chara proposes to the player to delete the world so they can move on to the next one, she is aware that it is all a game, giving the option to either "DELETE" or "DON'T DELETE" the world. If the "ERASE" option is chosen this time, Chara will call the player "a great partner." Otherwise, if the "DO NOT ERASE" option is chosen, Chara will tell the player that she was the one in control all along. Chara will instantly jumpscare the player, screaming with her big, empty eyes and smile and a scary appearance as the screen suddenly shakes with flashing red and black lights. Finally, Chara will strike what would be the entire game, destroying it and causing it to slam shut, dealing a maximum of "9999∞" to every single thing in existence. There is an opportunity to start over from scratch by re-opening the game, but upon entering, there will only be a black screen along with the soft sound of light winds for ten minutes. Noticing that the player has been waiting for a while, Chara will talk to the player, asking if they really want to return to the world they themselves erased based on their own decisions. Chara will ask if they really think we are above the consequences, and will offer to restore the world in exchange for the player's soul and permanently affect the ending of the Pacifist Route. Refusing to exchange the soul will cause Chara to abandon the player back into the abyss, but he returns ten minutes later to ask the same question.
History. (7)
Chara is a kind of demon that merged with Frisk when she first fell into that bouquet of flowers. She has really cold attitudes and is capable of freezing your blood with psychological themes.
Relations.
Frisk manages to make many friends with the monsters in the underground in the neutral and pacifist routes. Sans: Sans is a short, big-headed skeleton. He wears an unbuttoned blue sweatshirt with a jacket, black shorts with a white stripe on the sides, and pink sneakers. He is always seen with a big smile on his face, and only slightly moves the corners of his mouth when he speaks. He has white pupils that tend to disappear when he speaks in a serious tone. He also has a bright, flashing iris that flickers between blue and yellow depending on the movement he is about to perform. When he speaks, he does not move his lips because he is a skeleton, which implies that he has a kind of telekinesis. Papyrus: Despite his lazy attitude and bad jokes, Sans admires and cares a lot for his brother Papyrus. Papyrus has a huge obsession and fanaticism for the human house as he always dreams of being a royal and popular guard. He reads his brother bedtime stories and helped him make his battle suit a few weeks before Frisk fell into the Underground. I also like to tease him from time to time by making one of his bad jokes. Sans worries a lot about other people taking advantage of his Papyrus' innocence. Unlike Sans, Papyrus is a taller and more flexible skeleton. Toriel: After Chara falls into the underground, Toriel takes on the role of a mother and takes care of her, giving her the same treatment and affection as she did with her son Asriel. It is some time later that she decides to do the same with Frisk and it is presumed that she also does the same with the other fallen humans, since after Frisk tries to battle her, she tells her that humans never come back after leaving, and she prefers to keep them locked up there taking care of them. She describes herself as an excellent foster mother with excellent treatment and appreciation and worrying about her. She has a white coat and looks like a kind, humanoid goat.
Relations. (2)
Asgore: Like Toriel, Asgore acted as Chara's adoptive father, treating him the same way as his son Asriel. He appears at the end of the game as the final boss, although in the true ending of the route, Toriel sends him flying while reuniting with everyone at the site. Undyne: Frisk first talks to Undyne during the first few battle encounters, after being chased by Undyne, she falls to the ground from the heat, to which Frisk quickly takes advantage of by giving her water since her body is similar to that of a fish. Frisk visits Undyne at Papyrus' house with the help of Papyrus, who helps them become better friends, showing a bit more of Undyne's prankster personality and even setting the house on fire in the process. When she finally decides to fight Frisk to regain her honor as a royal knight, she realizes that Frisk is a "weak loser with a big heart" just like Asgore, so she decides to be their friend. After the date with Alphys, she begins to fix and improve her past mistakes. Flowey is considered to be the only villain with bad intentions. He experiments on Sans using his SAVE ability, but it simply doesn't have any effect since Sans is aware of every reset, implying that Sans has been the only person capable of stopping him, just like Frisk in the Genocide route. Alphys: She is shown as a short scientist with many social insecurities regarding her tastes for anime and the admiration she has for Frisk, spying on him and helping him with whatever she can.
Curiosities.
• Frisk holding the umbrella and the glass of water with his left hand, implying that he is left-handed. This is also proven in the attack animations where the slash curves to the right, applying force with the left hand. • Frisk is allergic to Temmie, but not to the other furry residents of the Metro. • Napstablook was the only monster who didn't know Frisk's name until he was mentioned in the True Pacifist Route. • Frisk is the only human who survives at the end of any adventure.
Legend.
"Long ago, two races ruled the land: HUMANS and MONSTERS. One day, a war broke out between the two races. After a long battle, the humans were victorious. They sealed the monsters underground with a magic spell. Many years later... MT. Ebott 201X Legends say that those who climb the mountain never return."
