Superhero

The Maxx is a mysterious, foul smelling, cartoon loving, Pez eating, and self appointed hero to Julie Winters, a freelance social worker who often bails him out of jail. His adventures is followed in the real world and in an alternate reality, referred to as the Outback. In the real world, the Maxx is a vagrant, a "homeless man living in a box", while in the Outback, he is the powerful protector of the Jungle Queen. The Jungle Queen exists in the real world as Julie. While the Maxx is aware of the Outback, Julie is not, though it is integral to both of their stories. Maxx’s social worker and friend Julie was raped, beaten and left for dead while trying to help a homeless man. The physiological impact forces Julie to create a realm she calls ‘The Outback’ to cope with this trauma. One evening, Julie hits a man with her car on her way to work. Still suffering the effects of the last time she tried to help somebody, Julie covers the homeless man with trash to hide the evidence and unintentionally opens a portal to the Outback. The homeless man (Dave), accidentally merges with Julie's rabbit spirit animal as it tries to enter this realm through the portal. A purple lampshade among the trash transforms into the mask of The Maxx. The Maxx has no memory of his life before Julie. His mind continuously shifts between the real world and Julie's "Outback" spirit realm of Pangaea. He is driven by a strong urge to protect his "Leopard Queen" Julie. Maxx has an irrational fear that, if he takes off the mask, he will have the head of a giant rabbit. The Maxx deals with the nasty little critters named Isz that are sent after him by the series' villain, Mr. Gone, a serial rapist with supernatural powers and a mysterious connection to Julie and the Maxx. They turn twisted and black when crossing over from the Outback to the real world. He also watches over Sarah, a depressed teenager whom Julie counsels, and who has a connection to the Outback and, unknowingly, Mr. Gone.

Superhero

every human being has a spirit animal, which is linked to the person during a pivotal moment in their life. Julie's spirit animal is a rabbit. When she was very young, Julie rescued a dying rabbit that lay in the road in front of her house. Julie later witnessed her mother bludgeoning the rabbit to death with a shovel to put it out of its misery. This traumatic event linked the rabbit to Julie's subconscious. Julie projects the rabbit onto Dave as she tries to take care of him like the rabbit she was unable to save. Maxx, who is linked to Julie and her spirit animal, worries that, if he removes his mask, he will find the head of a rabbit beneath it. Sarah's spirit animal is a horse. In the latter half of the series, this spirit animal manifests itself as Norbert, a homeless man she takes pity on. Powers/Abilities: The Maxx is stronger and faster than regular humans. His arms are topped with claws that are raised from the back of his hands. These claws can cut through pretty much anything he is strong enough to drive them into, and cannot be broken. He wears an apparently living mask, which crawls around on his face, and bites those who try to touch the enlarged teeth. Being magical, his costume mends itself when damaged, and it's unclear as to whether or not his own injuries heal in the same magical manner. He can switch between the real world and the dream world through concentration; he is never fooled by disguises used by Isz, always seeing them in their true forms. However his mind appears to be damaged, and he tends to forget whichever world he isn't currently in.
