Mizuki

Background

Mizuki is an animator and video maker who uploads their MVs online. They were captivated by Yoisaki Kanade's music upon listening to it. Kanade saw the MV Mizuki made and invited them to the circle. Since Junior High, Mizuki is treated as an outcast for dressing and acting oddly. Mizuki expresses confusion over their criticism, seeing nothing wrong with wanting to dress cute. It's implied they do not attend school regularly due to the negative attention from their classmates. In the KAMIYAMA HIGH FESTIVAL! event story, Mizuki and Rui's first meeting during a past School Festival is revealed. Mizuki finds Rui on the rooftop, where the latter often comes to skip class. The two become quick friends, and still are in present-day. During the same event, Mizuki becomes friends with the other Kamiyama students, mainly Akito, who they call "Little Brother", and Tsukasa. They are also classmates with Shiraishi An in 1-A. In the second episode for the SEKAI Happy New Year! event story, it is mentioned that Mizuki has an older sister who lives overseas, though her name has yet to be revealed.

Appearance

Mizuki has light pink eyes and hair, slightly curled and worn in a side ponytail tied with a ribbon. Two even strands of hair are let loose, framing their face. They have pale skin and wear pink mascara. Their voice is powerful and notably androgynous.

Unit Outfit

In their unit outfit, they wear a black sailor uniform. The collar of their uniform is light gray with a black-and-pink ribbon. They wear a gray striped skirt, ruffled with frills and lace on the hem of the skirt. The outer layer of the skirt is held at the left side with a ribbon, exposing the inner layers of the skirt. They wear thigh-high black socks, as well as strappy black heeled shoes.

School Uniform

Mizuki wears the standard Kamiyama uniform when attending school, consisting of a blue plaid skirt and red bow tie, replacing the white shirt with a pink blouse. Over their uniform they wear a cream sweater with pink accents.

Casual outfit

Their casual outfit consists of a knee-length blue-gray pleated skirt with two frills on each side and suspender straps, leading to a loose, off-white, button-up, peasant top. Their hair is held up with a black bow, and uses a similar-looking ribbon as a bow tie, with the brand "CubeRouge" written along one of the strands in gold.

Middle School Outfit

During middle school they had much shorter hair and wore the male uniform for their school — a dark red blazer with gold buttons, a pale sweater-vest, plaid brown pants, and a light blue shirt with a turquoise tie. During this period, they also wore a flannel shirt, a baggy, blue sweater, and black pants.

Personality

Mizuki is a moody person, and Kanade thinks they only act on their own principles. They tend to get frustrated and upset when ridiculed, and strongly desire to express themselves freely, without holding back or being made fun of. They have an obsession with cute things, expressing it through their hand-altered fashion. Despite their energetic, carefree, and sometimes childish demeanor, Mizuki is often shown to be the most mature member of 25-ji, Nightcord de., as Ena herself admits in one of her card stories. [citation needed] They often assume the role of mediator in arguments, breaking things up between Mafuyu and Ena. Mizuki is fairly introspective, and is therefore usually the one to suggest breaks when they notice that their fellow members have grown tired or particularly stressed out.[2] Where Kanade tends to hone in on a certain task, Mizuki keeps their attention at least somewhat rooted in reality, able to sense changes in tension and atmosphere in the group. They are able to come to fairly nuanced conclusions about issues, as well as people, as is evident in the way they spoke of their feelings towards Mafuyu disappearing; explaining their emotions but acknowledging that it is not her responsibility to respond to, or feel saved by, Mizuki's feelings. For better or for worse, they have a very strong learned sense of boundaries; when to involve themselves in the affairs of others, and when to involve others in their own affairs. They acknowledge that they themselves are bound to have little understanding of others’ struggles before proceeding to offer an opinion. Mizuki carries with them a strong recognition of the struggles their fellow members face, and with this comes a belief that the group isn’t an appropriate space to share their own struggles. It seems that they stay secretive, to an extent, from an understanding that everyone has things they want to keep hidden.

Etymology

Akiyama (暁山): Aki (暁) means "dawn, sunrise", and Yama (山) means "mountain". Mizuki (瑞希): Mizu (瑞) means "congratulations", while Ki (希) means "hope". It is a unisex name. Mizuki's username, "Amia", is a combination of syllables from their first and last name. It comes from the villain of a magical girl anime Mizuki likes, named Mia.[3

Relationships

Fellow circle member. Mizuki is grateful towards Kanade for accepting them as they are. Asahina Mafuyu: Fellow circle member. Mizuki seems to understand Mafuyu's experience, and does their best to support her quietly. Shinonome Ena: Fellow circle member. Mizuki enjoys teasing Ena, and follows her on social media. The majority of Nightcord's chats are made up of Mizuki and Ena's banter.[4] Momoi Airi & Hinomori Shizuku: Though Mizuki was aware of Airi and Shizuku due to their idol status, they formally met through Ena during the What's On Your Mind? Exciting Picnic! event story. The three bond over makeup and fashion.[5][6] Azusawa Kohane: Mizuki briefly met Kohane at the Kamiyama School Festival before they ran off, not wanting to interrupt Kohane and An's time together. Shiraishi An: Classmate from 1-A and a close friend. An seems acutely aware of Mizuki's struggles, inviting them to the Kamiyama School Festival, since she knew everyone would be wearing costumes and Mizuki wouldn't stand out. Shinonome Akito: Knowing him firstly as Ena's little brother, Mizuki calls him "li'l brosef" (弟くん), much to his embarrassment. The two met during the Kamiyama School Festival. Aoyagi Toya: Mizuki met Toya during the Kamiyama School Festival. Mizuki, Toya and Akito all go together to watch Tsukasa perform. Toya seems to be happy that Tsukasa and Mizuki are friends. Tenma Tsukasa: Mizuki first saw Tsukasa in his class' play ― "Romeo and Juliet: Battle Royal" ― during the Kamiyama School Festival. They thought the play was hilarious, and that Tsukasa is cool. Kusanagi Nene: Another old friend. The two became acquainted through Rui's intervention to help them both. [citation needed] Kamishiro Rui: "An old friend".[7] The two bonded over being outcasts in middle school, hanging out on the roof together. Mizuki is happy to see that Rui's made friends since then.

On the Global server of Project SEKAI, Mizuki uses both feminine[9] and gender-neutral[10][11] third-person pronouns, though it is unknown which Mizuki prefers. When possible, Mizuki's name is used in place of pronouns entirely. On the Japanese server of Project SEKAI, Mizuki typically uses the masculine first-person pronoun Boku (ボク), which is most often used by immature or young boys, though it is also used by tomboyish girls. The suffix "-kun" has only been used with them once, by Rui in an Area Conversation. Mizuki is the one who made Rui and Nene's stage outfits after running into Rui working on NeneRobo, which Mizuki found "totally uncute."[12] The flowers in Mizuki's 1st birthday card are balsams, bottle gourd flowers, and St John's wort. Mizuki's first focus event was Secret Distance.
