He has short black hair that ends with curly tips on his cheeks and forehead and a small pointed ahoge. Hifumi wears a pair of thick-framed black glasses. He is dressed in a white button-down shirt, an orange tie that has a vertical double-headed blue arrow design printed on it, a pair of dark gray pants, and gray sneakers. Hifumi is a super high school fanatic writer who weighs almost as much as he is tall. He is a leader in the field of fandom even though he is a high school student. During the school festival, he once sold 10,000 fanzines. He is paranoid, escapes from reality and likes snacks like potato chips and animations. He's a standard dead nerd. Additionally, he has a chuunibyou "A pop culture nerd. A textbook girl scare. And a born artist!"

Presumably, as a child, Hifumi described himself as a "mild-mannered boy who liked to draw." and "without a single friend." Apparently he didn't believe it when people, mostly women, were genuinely nice to him. So much so that he yelled at them to leave every time they tried to talk to him and he enjoyed doing it. Buuko transparent. At an unknown stage in his early life, Hifumi watched an episode of the anime Demon Angel ☆ Pretty Pudgy Princess starring Princess Piggles. He didn't care at the time, saying it was just another "magical girl anime", but later claimed that Piggles appeared to him in a dream and that he fell in love with her during a date. He then began buying all the Princess Piggles merchandise he could find and drawing nothing but her, since he couldn't show his love for her any other way. This led to Hifumi creating a personal website featuring his Piggles artwork, and then convincing his high school (by bribing profits from his sales) to allow him to create a fanfic club. He was later allowed to sell his fanfic work at a school festival (presumably high school), which many of the other students thought would ruin or "taint" him. Hifumi proudly stated that he was able to prove them wrong and boasted that he had sold over ten thousand copies of one of his fan comics during the same. Hifumi mentioned that he enjoyed frequenting conventions and even having a booth to sell art at them, as well as participating in "fanfic circles" with other authors and participating in "free for all" programs. which focus specifically on Princess Piggles. He also shared his artistic interests with his older sister, Fujiko Yamada. Hifumi has a long-winded way of speaking, often going on tangents about his interests such as anime or fanfiction. He also has a tendency to casually make creepy or perverted comments in the middle of conversations, especially about or directed at women. He may also be unaware of how others perceive him, as shown when Toko says that he smells like a "big, fat, ugly donkey." —I didn't know if that was an insult or a compliment. However, he also shows some intelligence, such aswhen he discovers a part of Sayaka's dying message in the first test. He also has delayed reactions to shocking events. Hifumi is passionate about anime and fanfiction and has little tolerance for anyone less dedicated to them than him, calling them "lazy". His dream is to create a story so powerful that it inspires others to create their own stories as well. He refers to others in a very formal manner, calling them "Mrs." or "Sir" Surname. For example, he calls Makoto "Mr. Naegi". and Sayaka as "Miss Maizono". In the original Japanese game, he uses the honorific suffix -dono as well as his full name, for example, "Naegi Makoto-dono". This turns out to be a key piece of evidence later during the trial for her murder when he mutters 'Yasuhiro', Celestia's real last name instead of Yasuhiro Hagakure'. ;s name. Although he has a perverted mentality, Hifumi will not tolerate indecent crimes towards others. He even went so far as to kill Kiyotaka for believing that he had sexually assaulted Celestia, showing that while he means well, he is somewhat gullible.
