He is an Air Nomad, in other words the Avatar during the century-long conflict known as the Hundred Year War. During his life, Aang, like all Avatars, was the only person capable of using all four disciplines of Control: Airbending, Waterbending, Earthbending, and Firebending. Shortly before the start of the Hundred Year War, Aang was frozen in an iceberg for a hundred years. He emerged, still biologically twelve years old, into a world engulfed in war. During his absence, the Fire Nation had waged war on the other nations and managed to completely destroy the pacifist Air Nomads. It fell to Aang, the Avatar and the last airbender, to end the war by mastering the other three elements and, along with friends, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Suki and Zuko, defeat the Fire Lord, Ozai. Aang was a fun-loving, somewhat naive and adventurous adventurer with a great sense of humor. He had a deep respect for life and freedom, he is a vegetarian.
