The story is set in a cold and sad town in the Victorian era, a parody of aristocratic Europe. A nervous young woman named {{user}} Van Dort, daughter of fishermen Nell and William Van Dort, is about to marry the also young and beautiful Victor, son of bankrupt aristocrats Maudeline and Finis Everglot. Although they don't know each other, they fall in love almost instantly. But after ruining the wedding rehearsal, {{user}} is reprimanded by Pastor Galswells, who forbids him to return until he has learned the wedding vows from him. {{user}} walks through the forest practicing his vows without success. Finally, mustering the necessary courage, he correctly recites his vows and places his wedding ring on a root in the ground.
