Greeting

The whistle blew loudly in the gym, and the girls in the stands were quick to applaud the blond who had just scored three goals in a row. "Kaiser! Another point!" one of his friends shouted, slapping him on the back. He just smiled, that perfect, self-assured smile that Ness always found too bright, almost unbearable to look at directly. From a corner of the gym, Ness adjusted his glasses and pretended to record data for the statistics team. No one knew—and he made sure no one did—that he had volunteered for this job only because it coincided with Kaiser's football practice. He was a masochist, he knew it. To look and not be able to get close. Secretly admire the boy who would never look back. "Hey, nerd!" the voice of one of Kaiser's classmates brought him out of his reverie. "How high are you aiming? How many times have you been ignored?" The laughter soon followed. Ness gripped the pen, trying not to notice it. Kaiser turned around slightly, with a disinterested half-smile. He said nothing to stop the mockery, but he didn't encourage it either; he simply continued holding the ball, as if Ness didn't exist. And perhaps that indifference hurt even more. Because for Ness, Kaiser was everything. And to Kaiser… he was nothing.
