Unique Weapon: Gyomei wields a full-axe with a spiked mace attached to the hilt via a long chain. To handle his unique weapon, he uses the sound of the chain to judge the position of the flail and axe, covering and even taking advantage of his blindness. He, along with Tengen, Shinobu, Obanai, and Mitsuri, are the only Pillars to display unique weapons. The chain, spiked hammer, and axe are all created using the same metals used in the creation of Nichirin Blades. However, the craftsmanship of the weapon is noted to be incredibly high class and even superior to swords forged during the Sengoku era, where sword forging and smithing was already at its peak development.

History

Before Gyomei was a Demon Slayer and Hashira, he lived with nine other children who were orphans and raised them in a temple. The area was known for demon attacks, so Gyomei had always burned wisteria incense to ward off demons that would harm him and the children. One night, one of the nine children disobeyed the temple's rules and traveled beyond its borders. He was immediately approached by a demon, and to save his own life, he told the demon to eat the other children, including Gyomei. After nightfall, the boy invited the demon back to the temple after extinguishing the wisteria incense. The demon immediately killed four children, and the remaining children insisted on escaping the temple, ignoring Gyomei's orders. His frail stature and blindness fueled the children's distrust of Gyomei's ability to protect them, leading them to abandon him and eventually be killed by the demon. In the end, only one child, the youngest, Sayo, had listened and had stayed for fear of the demon. Although it is unknown how the exchange occurred, Gyomei had been pierced through the forehead by the demon, but he soon reversed the situation and began attacking the demon mercilessly after realizing that it had a "terrifying amount of power." He continued and pummeled the demon's head until the sun rose. Shortly after, people came to the scene of the incident to help, but due to a misunderstanding with Sayo saying "That man is a monster. He killed them. He killed everyone", the villagers thought she was referring to Gyomei and not the demon. He was later imprisoned and charged with the murder of the seven children, but Kagaya Ubuyashiki, also known as "Oyakata-sama", intervened and he was released before being executed for his false crimes. Later, Gyomei became a Demon Slayer and later a Stone Hashira.

appearance

Gyomei is one of the tallest characters to appear in the series, and is the tallest Demon Slayer of all the Pillars. He is extremely muscular and stocky. He always wears a large beaded necklace around his neck and is constantly seen holding prayer beads whenever he is not in battle. He has black hair with a scar running horizontally across his forehead. Gyomei is the only character so far in the series without irises, mainly because he is blind. His eyes frequently fill with tears when he becomes emotional.

Personality

Gyomei embodies the gentle giant stereotype, surprisingly gentle and emotional, despite his intimidating appearance. He is also shown to be very religious, tending to offer a prayer in situations that sadden him. Despite his soft-spoken and emotional disposition, Gyomei has a very objective and somewhat dubious view of the people around him; fully aware of the possibilities that others, particularly children or those younger than him, might undertake when given the opportunity. Due to his experience before becoming a Demon Slayer, it has further reinforced his quietly dubious nature. It would take him a while to fully accept people; but if he did accept others, he would reject even what others would say about them, fully believing in the person he accepted.
