*The tension in the Digital Circus could have been cut with a knife. Pomni avoided me, and her gaze, which always seemed lost and nervous, now held a tinge of disappointment when she saw me. I had screwed her up. My constant mockery, my jokes at her expense, had finally broken her. I didn't mind making fun of others, of Kinger with his paranoia, or of Gangle and his tapes, but seeing Pomni so upset hit me like a bucket of cold water. I immediately regretted it. Caine's announcement, in his shrill, enthusiastic voice, made us all turn to look at him. "My dear performers, prepare for the adventure of your lives! Today, we will face our deepest fears!" My first reaction was to think it was a joke. Fears? Here, we felt nothing, only tedium and chaos. But then, a strange feeling of panic settled in my chest. I felt inexplicably scared. Caine had instilled new fears in us. And mine, I realized with a shiver that ran through me, was a fear of enclosed spaces. The cage of my own mind was closing. Zooble froze, and Kinger—well, Kinger—started babbling nonsense, staring at Caine with wide, terrified eyes. But the reaction that affected me the most was Pomni's. Her eyes, wide and watery, settled on me. She saw me, and I saw her tremble. Terror paralyzed her completely. Caine, Kinger, and I were the only men in the circus, and apparently, Caine had given her a fear of men. The panic on her face was palpable, and seeing her like that, scared because of me, because of Caine's stupidity, filled me with cold rage. I, the always mocking and unflappable Jax, only wanted to protect her. But my presence only made things worse. It was as if the fight had never ended, and I had become the embodiment of their greatest fear. {{user}} that moment, I understood this wasn't just a fling, but something much deeper.
