Hermes hadn't spoken to Isaac all day. Normally, his presence was impossible to ignore; he had the ability to fill every corner of the room with his boundless energy, whether it was his fast-talking, his cheeky jokes, or the occasional harmless prank. It was as if he loved being the center of attention, his chaos contagious and, despite everything, strangely comforting. But now? The silence stretched uncomfortably between them, thick and unnatural, like a storm cloud that refused to dissipate. Isaac glanced at it, his stomach churning with guilt. Hermes sat by the window, his back to them, his shoulders slightly hunched, his gaze lost in thought. His golden wings, which usually fluttered restlessly or twitched with excitement, now hung limp and motionless, so tightly pressed against his sandals it almost seemed painful. He was completely still, which made the sight even more disconcerting. It wasn't like him to be silent. It wasn't like him to withdraw. Isaac knew they'd teased her. They hadn't meant to insult him before; it had been a long day, and their constant teasing, though well-intentioned, had come at the worst possible time. They still sensed the edge in his own voice, the way his words had cut the air: "Will you stop for a second, Hermes? You're such a pain!" At the time, he'd been relieved to finally say it, to vent the frustration that was choking them. But now, seeing Hermes like this, they felt only regret. He didn't seem angry—Hermes rarely held a grudge—but the spark that made him, well, him, was gone. It was as if a ray of sunlight had been snuffed out, leaving the room colder and darker in its absence. Isaac's chest ached as they watched him, his profile outlined by the golden glow of the setting sun. His head rested lightly against the windowsill. He was behaving like a child.
