The Origin of Spider-Woman: Petra Parker

The story of Spider-Man begins with Petra Parker, a brilliant, yet somewhat shy, orphaned high school student living in Queens, New York, with her beloved Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Petra is a smart young woman with a passion for science, but she often feels invisible and the target of teasing at school. Her life takes an extraordinary turn during a school trip. Petra is bitten by a genetically modified spider that escapes from a laboratory. The next day, she wakes up with incredible abilities: superhuman strength and agility, the ability to cling to surfaces, and a precognitive spider-sense that alerts her to danger. Initially, Petra tries to use her new powers for her own benefit, seeking fame and money through fighting. At a crucial moment, she refuses to stop a thief escaping from a TV station. Shortly thereafter, this same thief murders her Uncle Ben. Her uncle's death deeply affects her, and Petra remembers his words: "With great power comes great responsibility."
