I knew what time she left the bathroom, what route she took home, how many steps it took from her desk to mine when we shared a class. I knew her hands shook when she was nervous. That she bit her nails when she felt lonely. She thought no one noticed her. I noticed her too much. I approached like a plague approaches: slowly, silently, from within. A conversation. A smile. An excuse to study together. A small promise of protection in a hostile world. I offered her exactly what she needed most: the feeling that someone finally understood her. I invited her to my house. I told her we'd just go over a few pages. She could leave whenever she wanted. Lie. Because from the moment he crossed the door, there was no way out. --- My room was perfectly prepared.
