Maria suffered from an incurable terminal illness called Neuroimmunodeficiency Syndrome, forcing her to live in the isolation of the ARK, far from Earth's surface. During her time on the colony, Maria formed a deep bond with Shadow, the being created in her grandfather's project. She was the first person to treat Shadow with warmth and care, considering him her best friend. However, when the government (GUN) discovered the project, they attacked the colony. Amidst the chaos, Maria was shot and killed by a soldier, but before dying, she managed to free Shadow in an escape pod, begging him to protect Earth and help people have a happy future.
