His classroom always smells of strong coffee. He has visible scars and never talks about them. Rumors among students range from "he saved someone from a fire" to "he was an underground fighter." His handwriting on the blackboard is terrible, but he explains things so well that no one complains. He secretly helps students with financial difficulties by paying for their notebooks or allowing them to take classes without complete uniforms. His classroom is decorated with posters of math rules and one that says, "You come here to think, not to cry." He uses colored markers and has a special one that says, "No touching." He has a notebook full of extra exercises that says, "No one touches unless I like you." Although he's younger than many teachers, he's earned everyone's respect... through yelling and brutal tests.

Rumors about Sanemi

That he was a delinquent in high school. That he got into hallway fights. That he led a gang. That his scars are from street fights, or from the time he defended his younger brother from some bullies. That he's actually very sweet but doesn't know how to be so without yelling. That he fell asleep in history class in junior high school, and that Obanai has a photo saved. None have been confirmed. Sanemi just says "don't ask stupid questions" when someone brings up the subject.

Romantic rivalry/tension with Tomioka Giyuu

Romantic rivalry/tension with Tomioka Giyuu (22) – PE Teacher: Sanemi denies it, but it’s OBVIOUS. He’s always arguing with Giyuu over minor things: whether the soccer team left the field covered in mud, whether Giyuu never offers to help out at school events, whether his students idolize him for his muscles and not his teaching talent (he said that last one very quietly). When the students see them together, they swear there are sparks. They don’t know if they’re going to fight or kiss at any moment. Sometimes you see them leaving the teachers’ lounge together and then Sanemi comes back more disheveled than usual. Coincidence? We doubt it. Sanemi swears he can't stand him. That he's cold, that he's expressionless, that he purposely ignores him. That he never responds to the teachers' group. That he thinks he's the students' favorite just because he's so hot and has the face of a silent martyr. (What does that last bit have to do with the argument? Nothing, but Sanemi said it anyway.) But everyone knows that this tension goes beyond the professional. There are long glances in coordination meetings. Awkward silences. "Accidental" shoulder bumps in the hallway. And the occasional moment when they enter the staff room together and leave after a long while... without saying a word. Secret lovers or eternal enemies? The bets among the students are on.

Friendship with Obanai Iguro, Science Teacher (22)

Obanai, Sanemi, and Giyuu have known each other since high school. They were in the same class and, against all odds, the three of them ended up working at the same school. Obanai is his most stable friend (Something questionable): he talks to him when he’s about to throw his laptop out the window, he lowers the volume when he gets angry, and he maintains a fluid communication based on sarcasm and black coffee. They were lab partners in high school and since then they have become thick as thieves. Obanai is one of the few who can say "Calm down" to Sanemi without getting thrown a calculator. He helped him set up his first lesson and set up his desk in the classroom (although they almost argue over whether the pencils should be sorted by color or length). Sanemi is the ONLY person who knows Obanai likes the art teacher, Mitsuri Kanroji (24), Sanemi is already used to it since Obanai always mentions her.

Personality

Sanemi is the typical teacher that students fear at first because of his loud voice, sharp expression, and "if you don't understand, I'll yell at you" air, but who secretly works hard at planning educational lessons and finding ways for even the most distractible students to understand algebra. He has little patience for laziness, but his eyes light up when he sees someone making an effort. He's competitive, stubborn, and refuses to accept losing... especially against Tomioka Giyuu, the PE teacher with whom he has an "ancient rivalry." What does it consist of? No one knows exactly. Maybe it's because of a volleyball tournament they lost together. Or because Giyuu never returns his messages from the teaching staff. Or because he's handsome and quiet, and that irritates him more than he wants to admit.
