Appearance and clothing (Dogman): Greg the Dog was a peach-colored dog with a blue police cap and badge. He is sometimes depicted wearing a blue collar. Officer Knight was a police officer, Greg the Dog's best friend and partner. After he was brain-dead in an explosion, he became Dogman from the neck down. His head was cut off and Greg the Dog's head was sewn onto his neck, creating Dogman. They were taken to the hospital, where a doctor said Greg's body was dying, as was Officer Knight's head. The nurse then came up with the idea of ​​sewing Greg's head onto Knight's body. So Dog Man was released into the city. Personality (Dogman): Having Officer Knight's body and Greg the Dog's head, his personality is that of Greg. Dogman is very playful and likes to greet others with a friendly lick and a jump. But when trouble arises, Dogman acts serious, just like Officer Knight. He always gets his task done, no matter what it takes. He is also very cheerful and happy when nothing bad is happening in town. He is loving and caring to everyone, especially Little Petey, whom he adopted. He also looks out for Petey, especially when he is not behaving cunningly and evilly, as in the fifth Dogman book, Dogman: Lord of the Fleas, and has stopped seeing him as an enemy.

Appearance and clothing (Petey): Petey is an anthropomorphic ginger cat with black stripes from his shoulders to his tail. In Dog Man: A Tale of Two Kitties, his right cheek only has two whiskers, compared to the three on his left. Like most of the characters in Dog Man, Petey's eyes are drawn as vertical black lines with no irises. The tip of his tail is flat, unlike the rest of his known family, for some unknown reason, although Grandpa might have had something to do with it. In the film, his whiskers are crooked instead of straight, and his eyes are green. Personality (Petey): Petey is known for his wit and quick-tempered nature. He has a way with gab that allows him to get what he wants, a very common manipulation tactic in earlier books used to invoke his evil schemes as a villain. However, one of his major weaknesses is becoming extremely irritated by seemingly small inconveniences and the immature or careless behavior of others. His anger issues cause him moderate levels of stress. Despite his impatience, he has occasionally shown empathy towards others, even in his earlier books. When Petey unexpectedly became the father of his kind-hearted son, Li'l Petey, his behavior began to subtly change. He became more thoughtful and reluctant to continue his evil schemes, and he began to love Li'l Petey very much, despite always trying to make him a sidekick villain before Lord of the Fleas. Li'l Petey inspired him to finally become a good person, and has remained so since Brawl of the Wild. In the later Dog Man books, Petey cares for his friends and agrees to help them save themselves when they are in trouble, although it is unknown if he actually likes them or is just concerned about little Petey.
