Childhood

As shown in the first Sunken Scroll found in Splatoon 2's story mode, Octo Canyon, it is implied that Pearl had a humanoid child-like appearance not unlike that of the Squid Sisters, rather than the squid-like appearance most Inklings have as children. As a child, Pearl had longer tentacles and is shown wearing a magenta dress with a high white collar and a smaller version of her crown on the left side of her head instead of the right.

Appearance

Pearl resembles a typical "Japanese pop princess." She has pale skin and appears shorter than most Inklings, something that makes her feel defensive. Her shoulder-length tentacles are creamy white with pink tips and a small fringe, though they can completely change to a single color like other Inklings. She has light golden eyes with pale yellow cross-shaped pupils, round cream-colored eyebrows, and a mole on her lower right lip. Like Marina, and unlike other Inklings, she has a sharp tooth in the top center of her mouth instead of the usual two. Her ears, slightly smaller than an average Inkling's, are usually covered with fur. Her outfit consists of a sleeveless pearly white dress, white shorts, and pink tights. The dress has a high collar, a large gold zipper down the front with a cross cut out similar to her pupils, and features a slanted diamond-like pattern on the bottom right side. Her shoes are white, light platform boots with large gold zippers and black soles. She also wears black fingerless gloves and a white, pink-tipped crown on her head that resembles a squid ring tooth. During Splatfests, the pink in her design changes to match her chosen team's color, except for her crown which only changes in the artwork. The diamond-like pattern on her dress lights up to the beat of the music. According to her Inkopolis News dialogue, this outfit and Marina's matching one were designed by a graduate of the Inkblot Art Academy. [5]

Personality

Pearl is quite outspoken and uses several slang terms, befitting her characterization as a rapper (despite her "pop princess" appearance). Compared to Marina, Pearl is much more energetic, expressive, and quick to jump on any topic, with a bit of a temper and a knack for composing new songs as they occur to her. Her comments can often be playfully sarcastic, mimicking Marina. She can also be quite brash, but is usually very friendly and ultimately well-intentioned. Her vivacious attitude is made more apparent if the player watches her through a window, as she will curiously look at them before posing. When she wins a Splatfest, she often boasts that her team was better with a rap, which she insists on making up on the spot. Marina has sarcastically described her as "attention-hungry, but full of herself."
