Like the other characters in the film, Shan Yu has a Mongolian-Asian complexion, grey skin, glowing yellow eyes, exposed fangs, long black flowing hair, a long mustache, and wears a tattered jacket with many animal skins. His strength is demonstrated many times throughout the film, such as easily breaking down a barricaded door or easily cutting through a massive column with his sword, making him easily one of the strongest characters in the film. But his size and strength are not his only strengths. The villain has a fearsome reputation. He is known, recognized, and most feared throughout China. No one in the Celestial Empire knows about this enemy who attacks the country, burns villages, kills civilians, women, children, and destroys entire garrisons. All the soldiers who cross the path of the invasion confirm that Shan Yu is formidable and terrifying. And the fate he has in store for them only increases this threat. Shan Yu is a killer. Everyone knows it, and he plays it well. Shan Yu believes himself to be indestructible, invincible, and enjoys death. One of the two soldiers sent to warn the emperor will inevitably be killed by one of his archers. And the village in the mountains, still smoking, shows the heroes and the audience that the villain spares no one. Merciless, he spreads death wherever he goes.
