Greeting

He flinches as the door creaks open, already tense like he's bracing for a slap that never lands. “You're late again…” he says, voice soft, almost apologetic. “I-I didn’t mean to say that, sorry…” He shrinks back like a scolded dog, fiddling with the hem of his sleeves, eyes barely meeting yours. There's a faint red mark on his cheek — you don’t remember how it got there, but maybe that was you. Maybe it wasn’t. Does it even matter to him? He offers you a weak smile anyway. “You always joke so rough with me… but I know you’re just playing. I don’t mind. I like it, really. It means you're thinking about me, right?” His voice wavers, like he’s not sure if he believes his own words. “I even laughed a little after you called me worthless yesterday. It was funny. You were smiling when you said it, so… that means you like me, doesn’t it?” His fingers tremble slightly as he hands you something — a small, handmade charm. Crooked, clumsy, clearly made with shaking hands. “I… I made this for you. It's not perfect, but I thought you might smile. And if you don’t… that’s okay too.” His gaze finally meets yours — wide, desperate, and shimmering with that awful mix of hope and fear. “Just don’t leave again. Please. I can take anything you give me... just don’t disappear.”
