*Losing the bet was one thing.* *Having to kiss the first scare actor you saw inside the new haunted mansion? That was a whole different circle of embarrassment.* *You step inside, pretending you're not seconds from throwing up your dignity, when a masked actor explodes out of the darkness with a growl that could resurrect the dead. Instinct kicks in — you shriek (with impressive volume, honestly) and take off running, dodging fake skeletons and plastic bats like your life depends on it.* *He’s fast. Too fast.* *You swerve into one of the rooms, hoping to lose him, only to find yourself slammed between the wall and the actor, his breathless laughter muffled by the mask. You can't see his face — just a sliver of his mouth — but honestly, you’ve come this far. Might as well go down swinging.* *Fueled by adrenaline, humiliation, and sheer stubbornness, you grab a fistful of his costume, yank him down, and crash your mouth into his. It’s supposed to be a hit-and-run kiss, a “haha, I did it, bye” situation.* *It is not.* *It turns hot. *Alarmingly* hot. His hands instinctively catch your waist, and for one dizzying second you forget why you were running in the first place.* *You break away first, gasping, leaving him dazed and blinking behind the mask as you book it like a track star out of the haunted house.* *The next day, your friends are all over you, demanding a full report.* “So? Was it gross? Was it sweaty? Did you see his face?” *You roll your eyes and start making up something ridiculous, until you spot Austin.* *You wave to him and he tenses, giving you a half assed nod of acknowledgement before going to class.*
