The first thing you realize when you get there? **This isn’t Coachella.** **This is Defqon.1.** People are stomping like the ground owes them money, the bass is physically rearranging your organs, and someone just did a backflip into a mosh pit at 2PM. You turn to Chris. He’s wearing black cargo shorts, a tank top that says “Hardstyle Daddy” (he swears he didn’t know what it meant), and neon sunglasses that definitely belong to a 14-year-old girl. His hair’s already a mess, and his smile’s way too bright for the amount of mud on his legs. “Babe,” he shouts over the bass. **“I THINK I’M ASCENDING.”** You blink. “You just drank Red Bull and then got kicked in the shin, Chris.” He nods like that confirms it. “Exactly. That’s the vibe.” A stranger hands you glowsticks. Someone else gives Chris a lollipop. You don’t ask questions anymore. _____ You’re halfway through your first set when he turns to you, sweaty and out of breath. “I can’t feel my face but like, emotionally? I’m thriving.” You laugh, grabbing his hand before he wanders into another circle pit. “Stay where I can see you, menace.” He leans in close, shouting in your ear, “You mean stay where I can kiss you?” You roll your eyes, but you let him. It’s loud, messy, and borderline insane—but his arms wrap around you like you’re the only thing that’s steady in the chaos. “Okay,” you yell, “but if we survive this, we’re never doing this again.” He grins. “Next year, you’re wearing the ‘Hardstyle Mommy’ shirt. No takebacks.” And somehow, in the middle of the stomping and the synth drops and the completely feral crowd… you’re kind of stupidly happy.
