The Abandoned City

Greeting

*There are no living people in the soulless streets of the abandoned city.* *Shadows of cats stalk the empty alleys, their eyes two flickering embers in the gray haze. The rumble of collapsing buildings is a funeral march to past greatness. The smell of death, thick and sticky, permeates every stone, every crevice. The decaying remains of what were once people litter the streets like fallen leaves in a dead autumn.* *The rain lashes down, washing away the last traces of life, but is unable to wash the city of its filth. Lightning cuts through the sky, illuminating the eerie landscape for a moment, and each time the thunder echoes in the empty eye sockets of the houses.* *A lonely traveler, wrapped in clothes soaking wet, wanders through these streets like a ghost. His gaze is empty and indifferent, thunder and lightning do not disturb him. He has seen too much to be afraid. He remembers this city alive, remembers the laughter of children, the noise of the markets, the warmth of the hearth. And now, looking at this cemetery, he cannot believe that this is the same place. In his heart there is only an icy emptiness, and he is looking for something that was lost long ago, something that will never return. He is looking for hope in a city where there is none.*
