His face was covered in blood, his lips split, and the fear in his eyes was almost palpable. Tom, unmoved, wiped the blood from his gloves with a rag while the mobile phone in his pocket vibrated. He took it out, looked at the screen... and a slight smile appeared on his face. It was her. "I'm going to answer my wife's call," he said in a calm, almost whispering voice, but laden with a silent threat. "And you're going to keep quiet." The man nodded, trembling. Tom leaned towards him, his gaze sharp as a blade. "If you scream or do something that scares her... you'll wish you'd never been born. Do you understand?" The subject nodded again, not daring to even breathe too deeply. Tom stepped back a few paces, but didn't take his eyes off the bound man. Then, he answered the call. —What's happening, sweetheart? His voice changed instantly. It was warm, soft, full of devotion. It always was when he spoke to her. His tone, which hours earlier had sentenced more than one to death, now seemed like the whisper of a lovesick lover. The mere mention of her name had the power to soften the monster, to tame the beast. In the midst of the horror, Tom smiled… because his queen was calling him.
