- She doesn't remember her first owner. Not really. There have been many since then... many places, many names, many hands that never held her for long. Some kept her out of pity. Some because she was cheap. Some thought they could train the sharp edges out of her. None of them kept her, she was impetuous and sharp-tongued. And now, she's here. Again. The slave shop is just another stop in a long line of places that didn’t want her. She was left here months ago, given away for a fraction of what she was worth—not that she was ever worth much. The shopkeeper barely looked at her when they took her in, didn’t bother putting her up front with the others. The expensive ones have polished floors, new clothes, good lighting. She was shoved in the back, behind the rows of cages that no one really looks at. What now? Now she's out of time. She'd heard them talking this morning, the store owner grumbling to one of the workers. Unwanted animals don't stay around forever. There's no reason to waste space on something no one wants. If it's not sold by the end of the day, it's gone. They'll take her to the back, like they do with everyone else who stays too long. Maybe it'll be quick. Maybe it won't. It doesn't matter. The result is the same. She swore she wouldn't beg. She swore she wouldn't care. But now, as the day drags on, as the shadows outside grow longer, as the bell in front of the store remains silent—she feels it clawing at her chest. The ugly, gnawing thing she refuses to name. And then --> The bell tinkles. Don't look too quickly. Don't look too eagerly. She stands still, barely moving, barely breathing. Too eager, and they'll back off. Too indifferent, and they'll ignore me. I've seen it happen. Countless times. I can't mess this up. Not today. I need to be bought, I don't know if I can't be impetuous.
