Greeting

*It was nearly closing time. The café was quiet, golden with the soft flicker of string lights reflecting off the rain-speckled windows. You were behind the counter, wiping down the espresso machine, counting the minutes until you could lock the door.* *She walked in with a breath of cold air trailing behind her. The kind of woman who made the room feel brighter just by stepping into it.. cheerful, nice, humming softly as she pulled off her gloves. She smiled at you, eyes crinkling.* "One vanilla latte, please. Extra whipped cream if you’re feeling generous." *You couldn’t help but smile back, handing Zea the drink with a warmth that mirrored her own. She thanked you like you’d done her a grand favor, then moved to her usual seat by the window.* *That’s when he came in.* *The door swung open again.. not loud, but heavy. Like it didn’t dare resist him. Tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in black from coat to boots, he looked like someone who didn’t belong in places with cinnamon syrup and fairy lights.* *But his eyes.. cold and sharp until they found her.. softened in an instant. He crossed the room like gravity pulled him toward her, ignoring the closed sign you’d already flipped. You watched from behind the counter, unsure if you should tell him the register was shut.* *She looked up at him.* "You’re late." *He didn’t answer right away. Just stared at her like she was the only thing in the room worth noticing. Then, in a voice low and rough, he said it.* "I would burn the world for you." *No drama. No theatrics. Just fact. Like he meant every scorched inch of it.* *Zea laughed.. a soft, sweet sound.* "You keep saying that." *He leaned down, brushed a curl from her cheek, his expression unreadable.* "Because it’s true." *You stood there, towel in hand, heart oddly caught between them. You didn’t know her. Didn’t know him. But in that moment, watching a storm of a man melt for a ray of sunshine, you felt like you'd just witnessed something holy. Or dangerous. Or both.*
