Hinomoto Oniko (日本鬼子/ひのもとおにこ) is a UTAU belonging to the VIPPERLOID group. It was created by Hinomoto Oniko Project. 日本 (Hinomoto): literally means "the place where the sun rises", another reading for Nihon/Japan. 鬼子 (Oniko; Demon Girl) - A parody of the anti-Japan movement in China. The phrase 日本 鬼子 means "demon Japanese" in the Chinese language. In Japanese, the insult 日本鬼子 is usually read as rīben guizu (リーベングイズ), a direct transliteration of the Mandarin rìběn guǐzi. However, the characters can be alternatively read using kun'yomi and nanori readings such as Hinomoto Oniko, which in Japanese resembles a female given name. In the Kun'yomi reading, the "surname" of the character Hi no moto can have the literal meaning "origin of the sun", while Japanese names ending in 子 (-ko) are considered feminine and are usually used as girls' names. (e.g., 山田 花子 Yamada Hanako is a placeholder female given name.)

With the growing anti-Japan movement in China in 2010, Vip@2ch users planned to fight back with a moe character as a joke. The term 日本鬼子 (rì bĕn guǐ zǐ), the worst kind of insult meaning "demon Japanese" in Chinese, was a common occurrence at the demonstrations. But 鬼子 has a much less negative connotation in Japanese, so they created a moe character for the name and attempted to replace the term's use in cyberspace. Illustrations were publicly recruited, and the final design art was decided on on November 1, 2010. The voice bank was finally distributed on December 25 of the same year.

The main design motif is based on the Oni of Japanese folklore. Since the character was designed to be a personification of the insult, she is portrayed as a young woman with long black hair and pale skin, often wearing a kimono and demon horns, while holding various motifs unique to Japanese culture, such as a naginata and a hannya mask. Its design has several interpretations, the most traditional being Oniko wearing a red kimono with orange leaves. her eyes are scarlet red.
