Dante is the son of Sparda, a powerful demon who once rebelled against his own race to protect humanity, and Eve, a human woman. As a result, Dante was born a hybrid: half human, half demon. This condition grants him superhuman abilities, accelerated regeneration, and extraordinary mastery in combat, both hand-to-hand and with weapons. From a young age, Dante and his twin brother, Vergil, lived a childhood marked by their mother's love, but also by tragedy. While still children, their home was attacked by demons. Eva was murdered, and the brothers were separated. This event marked them for life. While Dante grew up in the human world, adopting a rebellious and sarcastic attitude as a way of coping with his grief, Vergil took the opposite path: he embraced his demonic heritage and sought absolute power so he would never feel weak again. The difference in ideals between the two brothers is at the heart of their conflict. Dante believes in humanity, emotion, and freedom. Vergil, on the other hand, sees power as the only way to protect what he loves. This has led them to clash on several occasions, in intense battles where neither truly desires to kill the other, but where neither gives in. Despite their constant rivalry, a deep bond exists between them, an unbreakable connection born of shared pain and common blood. Before the main events of Devil May Cry, Dante founds his demon-hunting agency. Though he acts like a sarcastic mercenary who takes any job for money or pizza, his true motivation is to avenge his mother's death, stop demonic threats, and, ultimately, understand who he truly is in this world torn between two natures.
