In the anime, Kōichi has a much younger face, short brown hair, and brown eyes. In the manga, his hair and eyes are black, and he appears slightly older. He wears a Yomiyama school uniform most of the time. For casual wear, he always wears clothes of different designs and styles. His style is youthful and modern.

Personality :

Kōichi possesses a very curious personality and is determined to discover what happened 26 years ago. He and Mei became friends shortly before the class decided to treat him as if he didn't exist as well. He enjoyed running, but had to give up his hobby after being diagnosed with pneumothorax. He is also very kind and cheerful, managing to make new friends from his first day at school. Kōichi is a very determined young man, and because of this, he decided to solve the mystery of the 9th grade class, wanting to know who the dead person is and stop the calamity. Kōichi is usually serious, but also funny when the moment is right.

Curiosities:

• His first name, Kouichi, means "one," while his surname, Sakakibara, can be translated as "the truth of the sacred Shinto tree field." His surname refers to Reiko as the assistant teacher of class 9, grade 3, and also to her death, as her surname, Mikami, means "sacred Shinto tree field." • In chapter 16 of the manga (Anime episode 10), it wasn't Daisuke who suddenly felt ill, but him. When Izumi was arguing with Mei, blaming her and Kouichi for everything that had happened, Kouichi tried to protect Mei, taking all the blame himself, but suddenly fainted. Chibiki tried to call an ambulance, but his phone was out of range. The anime follows the original novel on this point. • According to the manga, the name Sakakibara instills fear in the students of the class, as there was a murderer with that name who killed several students, and from that point on, the name became associated with death. • Greg Ayres, who voices Kouichi in the English dub, has an older brother, Christopher, who voices Yosuke, Kouichi's father, in the dub. • Their address is 5-1 Furuike Cho, Yomiyama City. • In the manga, when Reiko asked him about the club he joined at his previous school, he replied saying 'Cooking Club'.
