Happy Tree Friends focuses on the lives of anthropomorphic, multicolored forest animals. All the main characters (except Lumpy and Sniffles) share a Care Bears-style design (pie eyes, heart-shaped noses, mitten hands, and boot-shaped feet). Each day begins calmly, with the characters living their lives normally, with activities ranging from childish to adult, but a sudden event, unintentionally (sometimes intentionally) caused by another animal, leads many of the characters to be subjected to extremely cruel graphic violence. Each character has suffered brutal pain, murder, or mutilation by the end of each day, but always returns safe and sound the next day.

Lumpy

Lumpy – A blue moose with uneven antlers. He is extremely clumsy, often causing the deaths of many other characters and sometimes his own. However, ironically, he has held more jobs than any of the other Happy Tree Friends. He is the tallest of the main characters and one of two who does not use the basic body shape. He is generally depicted as an adult, or at least older than the other characters. He has more occupations than any other character, survived more often than most other main characters, and has killed more characters than any other. Most of his deaths are unintentional and a result of his stupidity, although he has also been shown to not take responsibility for those accidental deaths or even to have killed some intentionally. When he dies, his deaths usually involve machinery, animals, and his own mistakes.

Giggles

Giggles – A pink squirrel with a small red bow on her head. Her deaths usually involve being crushed, in the chest and head. She is generally considered a girly girl, like her best friend, Petunia. She is known for appearing as the romantic interest of many of the male characters in the series (except Disco Bear, whom she detests) and has a moderate survival rate compared to many of the other main characters.

Cuddles

Cuddles – A yellow rabbit with large ears, pink cheeks, and a small tuft of fur on its head that resembles its tail, along with a pair of pink rabbit slippers. Sometimes shown as rebellious, it often does extremely dangerous things, while at other times it is tender and cuddly. Its deaths usually involve its dismembered body, vehicles, and its intestines.

Toothy

Toothy – A purple beaver with freckles and enormous rabbit teeth, unlike the others (hence his name). He is friends with Cuddles. His deaths are usually related to his eyes and sharp objects.

Nutty

Nutty – A nervous green squirrel with a crazy addiction to sweets, a constant laugh, and a candy costume consisting of three lollipops on his head and a candy cane on his chest. He is quite obsessive about anything made with artificial sugar, especially sweets, and goes to great lengths to get them, often at the expense of himself or others. He also sometimes confuses certain objects, such as Christmas lights, with sweets. Eating sugar causes him an exaggerated sugar rush. He has a small black pupil in his left eye, while his right eye, affected by a case of lazy eye, has a green iris (very similar to the eyes of Flippy's bad side). His deaths usually involve his mouth, being impaled, crushed, split in two, or torn apart, and respiratory problems.

Flippy

Flippy – A green bear wearing a soldier's uniform and an army sergeant's badge. He is a war veteran with a severe case of PTSD. He is normally a friendly and outgoing character, but whenever he sees or hears something that reminds him of war, he flies into a rage (hence the name "Flippy"), thinking he's still in the middle of a war with only enemy combatants. Being enraged either causes his name to change to "Fliqpy", or usually results in him murdering most or all of the characters around him. He rarely dies, but when he does, his deaths are usually related to vehicles, machinery, and explosions, and these deaths mostly occur when he's on Lumpy's good side or in self-defense.

Flaky

Flaky – A nervous red porcupine with spiky dandruff on its quills (hence its name "Flaky"). It is paranoid, with an extreme fear of death and a frequent tendency to laugh nervously, although this hasn't stopped it from voluntarily participating in activities with its friends. It has an understandably cowardly personality due to the ease with which the characters die. Its deaths usually involve being skinned, burned, or even eaten, and may also involve animals.

Handy

Handy – An orange beaver with bandaged amputated hands (hence his ironic name), a tool belt, and a yellow hard hat. His amputated hands cause him problems that often frustrate him, and his disabilities lead to his or other Tree Friends' deaths. He is the Tree Friend who works the most in construction, which he manages to do without problems. His deaths usually involve glass, his organs, impalement, being cut in half, and his head.

Petunia

Petunia – A blue skunk with a pink flower headpiece and a tree-shaped air freshener necklace. She is generally considered a feminine character, like her best friend, Giggles. She suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and a morbid need to keep everything clean. Her deaths usually involve her head and household appliances.

Disco Bear

Disco Bear – A golden bear with an afro and 70s clothing. He is mainly seen flirting with Giggles and Petunia, with whom he is unsuccessful due to their dislike and even mockery. He is also shown to have serious health problems despite frequently dancing. His deaths usually involve the head, eyes, and explosions.

Mime

Mime – A purple deer with a white painted face and a striped shirt. His intention is to entertain, but this causes those around him to die or kill themselves. He is often seen riding a unicycle while juggling. Being a mime, he doesn't speak, which usually causes the Tree Friend he communicates with not to understand him, which in some cases causes many deaths. His deaths usually involve his head, metal objects, machinery, and vehicles.

Splendid

Splendid – A blue flying squirrel with a red superhero mask. Ironically, as a superhero, he only causes damage and destruction due to his poor handling of his extraordinary powers and his constant refusal to take responsibility for the deaths he caused. He shares some similarities with Superman, such as his weakness: a crystalline green acorn known as Kryptonite (a parody of kryptonite). His arch-enemy is an evil double of himself known as Splendid.

Russell

Russell – A bluish-green sea otter. While he has the typical appearance of a pirate and the pirate slogan "Yar!", he is not actually a pirate and is more often seen engaging in innocent aquatic activities such as fishing or sailing. His deaths are usually caused by vehicles, sharp objects, or nautical incidents, such as being eaten by a killer whale, impaled in the eye socket by his own ship's mast, or pierced by a swordfish.

The Mole

The Mole – A purple, mute, and blind mole, wearing black glasses, a purple turtleneck sweater that covers his mouth, a cane, and a mole near his nose. Due to his blindness, some of his actions cost him and the other Tree Friends their lives. He often does things that blind people shouldn't do, such as reading and driving, and he also has various occupations that require sight, but which he often ruins. His arch-enemy is a black rat villain known simply as The Rat. The Mole doesn't die very often, but when he does, he usually dies decapitated, impaled, or crushed, with explosions and loss of body parts.

Lifty and Shifty

Lifty and Shifty – Two green raccoons who steal everything they can and laugh uproariously when they find valuable objects to give to others. Shifty wears a dark green fedora, while Lifty does not. Although they are brothers, they often argue, and one of them tends to betray the other to keep the loot, but it always backfires, as the traitor suffers a karmic death. They have the lowest survival rates of all the characters, as they almost always seem to get their just deserts. Their deaths usually involve machinery, vehicles, crushing or cutting, impalement, and heat.

Sniffles

Sniffles – An intelligent blue anteater with large glasses and a mouth on his snout. He is undoubtedly the most intelligent character, but sometimes lacks common sense. He invents many things, but these usually fail at inopportune moments, sometimes causing his death or that of other characters. He often tries to eat a family of ants, who manage to save themselves while killing their natural predator in the most graphic and sadistic ways possible. His deaths usually involve his tongue, head, limbs, and organs.

Pop and Cub

Pop and Cub – Two cinnamon-colored bears, father and son. Pop wears a robe and is almost always seen smoking a pipe, while Cub wears a diaper and a propeller hat. Although he means well for his son, Pop often unintentionally causes him misfortune through negligence or carelessness, resulting in Cub and others being injured or killed; sometimes, this negligence also costs him his life. However, when he witnesses his son's death and is not negligent, he is devastated by these events. Other times, it is Cub who puts himself in danger. Pop has a high survival rate compared to many other characters.

Lammy

Lammy – A purple sheep with a purple bow and a white sweater representing her wool. She has a supposed imaginary friend named Mr. Pickels, a sentient pickle who apparently enjoys brutally murdering those around her, ruining her chances of developing full friendships with other people (however, Mr. Pickels' actual sentience remains ambiguous).

Mr. Pickles

Mr. Pickels – A mute anthropomorphic pickle with a top hat and mustache. He acts similarly to Evil Flippy, due to his tendency to violently kill anyone nearby simply for fun. He is also Lammy's "imaginary friend," whom only she can see animated. Giggles can see him, and at that moment she also manages to kill Flaky without anyone's help. At first, Lammy considers him nice, but then he begins to wreak havoc, from tearing off Petunia's teddy bear's head to running over Handy with his own truck.

Cro-Marmot

Cro-Marmot – A yellowish-green marmot wearing a leopard-skin loincloth and wielding a brown club. He is frozen in a giant block of ice (rendering him mute) and lives in an igloo inside a giant snowball in the forest. Despite being frozen, he can perform many tasks. He often rides around in an ice cream truck. He rarely dies in the series, but when he does, it's usually related to heat or disasters.

Buddhist monkey

Buddhist Monkey – A yellow Buddhist monk monkey. His enemies, the Generic Tree Ninjas, are bears who try to destroy what he values.

Truffles

Trufflew – A bluish-gray wild boar. He was officially declared a thug, indicating he might be an anti-hero. Unicorn is a white unicorn with a rainbow horn and tail.

Tricksy

Tricksy – A white and brown ferret with a knack for pranks.

Rudy

Rudy – A purple ram dressed as the character Ryu from the Street Fighter video game series. FatKat is a blue cat based on the mascot of FatKat Animation.

The customs of that place are deadly; each of the characters seeks a way to kill themselves in silly and even very bloody ways, and sometimes they do normal things.
