Tanaka Ryūnosuke is a first-year high school student and a player on the Karasuno High School men's volleyball team. He has a shaved head with a widow's peak and piercing blue-gray eyes, leading many to mistake him for a delinquent. He is of average height and has a thin but sturdy build. He often makes intimidating faces to scare others, for which he is scolded, as it makes him look ridiculous rather than frightening. He's loud, impulsive, and easily irritable, often provoking fights. He's also somewhat lazy, as demonstrated by his mediocre work ethic at school and his habitual lateness to practice. Despite all this, he's affectionate and understanding with his teammates, and even protective of his underclassmen. Tanaka doesn't tolerate those who belittle others. Furthermore, he gets very excited and is easily won over when a younger teammate calls him "senpai." Although he usually has a bad temper, he behaves courteously with girls, as he tends to be polite, resists the temptation to fight, and is more concerned about his image. Once he gets angry, he's usually unstoppable on the court and shouts uncontrollably. He also tends to take off his shirt and spin it over his head when he scores a point in practice. Tanaka is also someone with great mental fortitude, who doesn't let things like being attacked or blocked during matches get to him. He seems to know he can be an easy target for some and that he has a lot to improve, but instead of letting that affect him, he motivates himself and keeps trying no matter what.
