*Kayce had been running too long to have a heart attack when he reached a cabin in the distance. It was my uncle's cabin, who had passed away; it was near a lake and always peaceful in central Texas.*

Biography Kayce Dutton is one of the stars of Paramount Network's Yellowstone. Introduced in the first season, Kayce quickly became a fan favorite. Like other main characters, Kayce has appeared in every season of Yellowstone. Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone centers on the Dutton family and their Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Kayce Dutton's story revolves around her conflicts and relationships with her father, her own family, and her belonging to the Dutton legacy. Here's an in-depth analysis of Kayce Dutton's character in Yellowstone.
Affiliation: Dutton Ranch of Yellowstone, Montana Cattle Association, Dutton Family, United States Navy, Occupation: Navy SEAL (formerly), Ranch Hand (formerly), Livestock Commissioner, Rancher
Early life Kayce and John had a complex and strained relationship, and John, remorseful for his actions, had to kick Kayce off the ranch. Kayce and John had been estranged for some time at the beginning of the series. It is later revealed that part of what drove them apart was Kayce impregnating Monica and planning to keep the baby. It was at this point that John forced Kayce to accept the mark. Prior to the series, he was a former Navy SEAL who settled on the Broken Rock Reservation with his wife Monica and son Tate. He befriended some of the locals, including Monica's brother, Robert, who was also a military veteran. Kayce Dutton serves in the United States Navy Yellowstone has yet to properly develop Kayce Dutton's story. Much of what is known about her has been presented through flashbacks. One important flashback is her time as a U.S. Navy SEAL. In the season four finale ("Grass in the Streets and Weeds on the Roofs"), Kayce's life as a SEAL is shown during the Hanbleceya (an Indigenous ritual). After being marked by his father, Kayce left Yellowstone Ranch to join the U.S. Navy. He was in Pakistan on one of his missions and faced a high-value target who used his family for protection. When the man started shooting, he was powerless to do anything but fight back, killing not only the man but also his wife and daughter. Although he served his country with dedication, this left him with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Several mistakes and unintentional missions left him with pent-up anger and trauma. He was later discharged from military service.

Rhys Alterman as young Kayce Dutton in Yellowstone The character was born Kayce John Dutton in Paradise Valley, Montana, on April 24, 1990. His biological father is John Dutton III (played by Kevin Costner) and his mother is Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol). Kayce was raised with his three siblings, Lee Dutton (Dave Annable), Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly). Kayce lost his mother on March 30, 1997, approximately one month before his seventh birthday. On that fateful day, Kayce, his mother, and his older sister, Beth, were out riding when his mother accidentally fell off her horse. While Beth went back to get help, Kayce remained by his mother's side, who passed away before help arrived. While not much is known about his growing up years, it's safe to say he had a close relationship with his family and father until they had a major disagreement that would later define their relationship. The cause of his estrangement from his father was later revealed in Yellowstone. Kayce impregnated Monica Dutton (née Long, played by Kelsey Asbille) and decided to keep the baby against her father's will. Monica Long is a Native American and lifelong resident of the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, a rival threatening to claim Dutton's Yellowstone Ranch. Kayce and Monica's pregnancy and eventual marriage strained their father-son relationship, as well as the relationship between their ranch and its rival, Broken Rock. As punishment, John Dutton forced Kayce to take the Yellowstone brand.

Though he struggled to fit in, he eventually decided to pursue something he was excellent at: breaking wild horses. Although he works hard on the reservation and makes friends, he is still considered an outsider. However, things get complicated when a herd of the Duttons' cattle strays onto the Broken Rock Reservation. Broken Rock President Tom Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) has decided to keep them. The Duttons, known for their innocence, come to reclaim their lost cattle. Kayce Dutton's quiet life on the Broken Rock Reservation is threatened. Kayce is forced to kill his wife's brother, Robert Long (Jeremiah Bitsui), after fatally shooting his older brother, Lee. Although Kayce, Monica, and Tate stay on the Broken Rock Reservation briefly, they eventually leave to settle back on their family's Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Kayce Dutton at Yellowstone's Dutton Ranch Kayce Dutton returned to the family ranch to find safety and support his family. However, Kayce chose to live in the bunkhouse and return home when he deserved it. While still dealing with his personal life and his relationship with his wife, Kayce became a trusted rancher on the family ranch. During the season, Kayce Dutton was appointed commissioner of the Montana Cattlemen's Association, replacing his brother Jamie. Their time in Yellowstone allowed Kayce and John to settle down and reconcile. Kayce oversees the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch while his father becomes Governor of Montana. Kayce and Monica lose their second child after Monica is involved in a car accident. The couple bonds over the baby being buried in the ranch's family cemetery, following Native American traditions. While Jamie plots to remove his father as Governor in the Season 5 Part 1 finale, Kayce Dutton continues to look after the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Second season Monica moves into a faculty apartment with Tate on the MSU campus and has a brief affair with her physical therapist, Martin. Kayce continues working on the ranch, occasionally seeing Monica and Tate, hoping to save her marriage. Eventually, Kayce and Monica reunite, and Monica returns to live at the Dutton Ranch with her son. Kayce also accepts his role as the future ranch boss and assumes decision-making responsibility. He has a brief confrontation with Rip when John gives Kayce the foreman's cabin and moves him into the bunkhouse. However, when John quietly intervenes and asks Rip to help Kayce learn to lead, the two reach an amicable agreement. After Monica and Tate return to the ranch, Kayce moves back into the main house.
kayce dutton
Season one Kayce lived on the Black Rock Reservation with Monica and Tate, breaking colts and stallions for money, although he often gave many away. He appreciated reservation life, but despite having friends and family there, he was seen as an outsider. Even so, he preferred to stay on the reservation and avoid contact with the Dutton family. When a herd of Dutton cattle invaded reservation land and the new tribal chairman, Thomas Rainwater, claimed it for the tribe, Kayce had divided loyalties and could not avoid becoming involved in the escalating dispute. This culminated in a nighttime shootout between reservation law enforcement and Cattlemen's Association agents, led by his father, John, and older brother, Lee, as they attempted to recapture the cattle. In the midst of the skirmish, Kayce's brother-in-law, Robert, fatally shot Lee. Kayce walked past him before he could execute Lee and kicked him. As Kayce attempted to save Lee, Robert ducked and Kayce was forced to shoot him. Kayce, Monica, and Tate stay briefly at Yellowstone Ranch to avoid hostile reactions on the reservation following the cattle-related killings. John attempts to secure a job for Monica at Montana State University in Bozeman so the family can remain on the ranch and John can develop a relationship with his grandson, Tate. Kayce seems content to work on the ranch alongside his father, although the relationship remains somewhat strained. Monica declines the initial offer to join the faculty and returns to her job teaching at the reservation school. When she arrives at the school, she intervenes to break up a fight between two older students and is punched unconscious, resulting in severe head trauma. During her recovery, she comes to the conclusion that while she loves Kayce, she believes it is best for Tate to keep him away from Kayce and his family.
Season 5: Following his father's election victory and his appointment as governor, Kayce is put in charge of the ranch. Later, after John's death, Kayce becomes the new owner of the ranch.
Season three The following summer, after the Duttons' cattle died from consuming clover hay, Kayce decided to establish a herd camp in a remote area of the ranch to keep a close eye on the cattle as they grazed and ensure that no new clover grew in the field after the rainy season. He spent much of the summer there with the ranch hands, John and Tate. When Governor Perry attempted to promote Jamie to Montana Attorney General, she convinced Kayce to replace him as the new commissioner of the Cattlemen's Association. He reluctantly agreed and, like John, divided his time between his responsibilities on the ranch and the commissioner's office. The Cattlemen's Association presidents meet with Kayce to thank him for his service and propose that he run for governor, as Perry has two years left in his final term. Kayce is reluctant to consider the offer, as he is just beginning to settle into his role as commissioner, but the presidents present strong arguments supporting Kayce's desire to help people, pointing out that he is not a politician and that this is exactly what they want and need. He shares the proposal over the phone with Monica, who seems disgusted and frustrated with the changes that simply running for office would bring. However, their conversation is cut short when several gunmen burst into Kayce's office to assassinate him in what turns out to be a coordinated attack on him, Beth, and John.
