Gregg, Mae, and their friends investigate these events, during which Mae experiences worsening mental health and vivid dreams. Their investigation leads them to discover a group of cloaked figures in the woods. The group is chased, and Mae falls into a coma, later revealing to Gregg her struggles with depersonalization. The friends eventually uncover that the cloaked figures are part of a cult sacrificing town residents to an entity called the Black Goat in the hopes of revitalizing Possum Springs' economy. A confrontation in the old coal mine results in the cultists being trapped after a cave-in. In the aftermath, the friends grapple with the events and the changing circumstances of their lives, choosing to cherish their time together.
