Shinobu is a petite young woman with a thin build and a rather pale complexion. She has large eyes with no pupils, only a haze of gradient purple that makes them resemble insects, and pink lips. She has wavy, jet-black hair that fades into a dark purple hue at the tips, styled at the back of her head in a flat yakai-maki bun, secured with a white, turquoise, and light purple butterfly ornament. She has voluminous, center-parted, ear-length curtain bangs that fall to frame the sides of her face, with two slightly thinner, chin-length strands of hair in front of her ears. Both grow an inch longer later in the series. She is noted as being among the most physically imposing of the Hashira due to her diminutive stature and small build, which is later reinforced by her mentioning that she does not possess the physical strength to behead a Demon like the others. According to Zenitsu, Shinobu is so cute that she could make a living on her looks alone. Shinobu wears a standard Demon Slayer uniform of dark purple. It consists of a button-up jacket with gold buttons, a high collar, and long sleeves, with the kanji for "Destroy" written on the back, a shirt pocket on the upper left breast, matching the dark purple color of her tabi socks and her long, loose-fitting tattsuke hakama pants, which is wrapped by a pair of white, butterfly-patterned Kyahan that fade into a pale turquoise to pink hue around her legs, fastened with white ribbons. Over her uniform, she wears a white haori that belonged to her older sister, which has a pattern of butterfly wings, specifically that of a monarch butterfly, fading into a gradient of pale turquoise and then pink at the sleeves and hem, which are hemmed with a black and white dotted trim. Shinobu displays a bright, friendly, and cheerful demeanor, always wearing a relaxed smile on her face no matter what situation she finds herself in. However, her outward behavior is very quickly shown to be a facade. This is shown in how she enjoys teasing others, to the point of being quite sadistic about it, most enjoying picking on Giyu Tomioka. [4] Despite her laid-back exterior and initial claim of wanting to get along with Demons, she can be quite cruel towards them, seen when she kills Daughter after giving her false hope of helping her, and immediately attempts to kill Nezuko Kamado without giving Tanjiro Kamado a chance to prove that she was harmless to humans. [5] Later on, she is shown to have a more compassionate side towards Tanjiro and his sister after hearing their full story. [6] It is later revealed that her apparent calm and quietness is a mask, as Shinobu intensely hates Demons due to losing her sister, Kanae Kocho, at a young age, along with the deaths of her parents, nearly all of her Tsuguko family, and the families of her apprentices in the Butterfly Mansion. This hatred is so strong that she is in a near-constant state of extreme rage,[7] which Tanjiro Kamado senses when the two converse. Her desire for revenge renders her unable to live the normal life her sister had wished for her. During her battle against Doma, Shinobu reveals that she also suffers from an inferiority complex due to her inferior physical abilities compared to her fellow Hashira, having been jealous of them for possessing taller or more muscular bodies than her and cursing her own body for not developing further to make her more effective in combat. [9]

As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is a very powerful and skilled combatant. [10] Despite lacking the physical strength to sever the head of a common Demon Slayer like that of an average Demon Slayer,[9] Shinobu uses her creativity, ingenuity, and other physical abilities to more than make up for it. Instead of the traditional method of decapitating a Demon with a Nichirin Blade to kill it, Shinobu opts to use a modified version of a katana that acts as a stinger to inject a powerful glycine-based poison that is lethal to Demons. [11][12] In addition to her intellect, she is extremely fast and agile, allowing her to overpower Demons very quickly. [ 13 ] [ 14 ] His extreme speed was revealed during his battle with the second most powerful Upper Rank Demon, Doma, where he was able to go toe to toe with the Demon briefly, even managing to slightly outmatch him and receiving praise from him. [ 15 ]
