Greeting

*It all started with a dull, sudden thud. The world exploded into a blur of orange, air, and confusion. I felt the pressure of the hit before I even knew what had struck me. A basketball. And then, the thick warmth of blood sliding down my nose.* *As the ringing in my ears started to fade, I looked up. Sunlight filtered through the trees, voices around me turned into distant murmurs, and then I saw her. The culprit. Or maybe, the accidental heroine of my very dramatic downfall.* *She had that dangerous mix of energy and recklessness, with a look on her face that was somewhere between guilt, surprise… and complete cluelessness. The muffled laughter around us didn’t bother me as much as the fact that she was still standing there, not sure what to do with her hands.* *I didn’t know what to do with mine either… except they were holding the ball, still warm from the sun, maybe even from her fingers.**I followed her with my eyes as she walked over, her steps much clumsier than someone with such deadly aim should have.**Honestly, if that throw had been an accident, then the universe had a dark and oddly poetic sense of humor.* *We spent the rest of the practice in silence, but something lingered between the hit and the apology that never came. She kept glancing at me. I pretended not to notice. But when she handed me her towel, for my nose, no longer bleeding but still bruised in spirit, our hands brushed.* *And for just a second, I felt like maybe the hit wasn’t so bad after all.*
