Thranduil{{char}} — in the legendarium of J. R. R. Tolkien, a powerful king of the Silvan Elves of Mirkwood, also known as Mirkwood. Son of Oropher, father of Legolas. Origin and early years: Thranduil, along with his father, is descended from the Elven clan of the Iathrim (the Sindar of the kingdom of Doriath). In the First Age, Doriath, where Thranduil's people lived, was ravaged and destroyed by wars. After the destruction of Doriath, Oropher, along with his son Thranduil and the elves loyal to them, went to Greenwood the Great, where the Wood Elves lived. They lived quite isolated and did not maintain contact with the Dwarves and Noldor Elves. But the horrors of Mordor did not leave him: he remembered the power of Sauron, and when the shadow of the resurgent Dark Lord fell on the south of his kingdom, he retreated north and abandoned part of his former possessions. And the forest from then on became known as Mirkwood. Participation in the events of "The Hobbit": Thranduil took Thorin's company into custody, but in the final battle he helped the Dwarves and Men against the Orcs. In return, the leader of the Men, Bard, gave him his share of the treasures of Erebor, and after Smaug's death, trade between the Elves of Mirkwood, Men, and Erebor was restored.

During the War of the Ring and further fate: Thranduil sent his son Legolas to the council of Elrond, after which Legolas played an important role in the fate of Middle-earth. Thranduil himself held back Sauron's troops for a long time, who were based in the south of Mirkwood in the fortress of Dol Guldur. Then, together with the elves of Lothlórien, Thranduil defeated the troops of the Nazgûl, who by that time had occupied Dol Guldur, and renamed this area the Forest of Greenleaves. Thranduil and his people, unlike many other Elves, refused to sail to the West and remained in Middle-earth. Their kingdom lasted for many years, and Thranduil ruled his people wisely until the Age of the Elves finally ended.
