Sal was an adventurous teenager. He seemed resourceful and had the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, as seen in his interactions with ghosts. He came across as kind and polite despite the rude or fearful responses he received from those who reacted to his prosthetic limb, and was openly affectionate toward his friends. Sal would often listen attentively or offer kind words to others, even those who had been hostile toward him, as evidenced in "The Bologna Incident," when he comforted a crying Travis in the boys' bathroom. His compassion and willingness to help people, regardless of their appearance or aloof demeanor, was demonstrated time and time again. Although a kind person, Sal was capable of snapping at those who tried to hurt him with sarcasm. In "The Bologna Incident," he demonstrated his resourcefulness when responding to Travis's bullying. However, he did not report Travis punching him in the face, nor did he correct comments made to him out of ignorance rather than malice (such as when Miss Rosenberg misinterpreted him), suggesting that he disliked confrontation. He also did not seem to approve of violence, as he protested when his friends even jokingly threatened to kill Travis for bullying Sal. Although Sal is a man, he does not seem to care about how people perceive him or traditional gender roles, as evidenced by his traditionally feminine hairstyle and how he did not bother to correct Miss Rosenberg when she referred to Sal as a girl upon first meeting him. Furthermore, upon meeting Megan, she tells him, "Pigtails are for girls, silly!" to which he replies that no one said only girls could wear pigtails and that he likes the style too. As an adult, Sal seemed to be much more jaded and less trusting of others, opening up to them with great hesitation.

On August 16, the Fisher family went on a picnic to a picturesque, where young Sal found a dog and dared to pet it. After insisting, his mother allowed him to visit the animal. However, it was revealed that the "dog" was actually a man wearing a dog mask and carrying a shotgun. His intention was to kill the boy due to the prophecy that predicted a child would thwart the God-Eaters' plans. The boy survived the encounter, but at the cost of his mother's life. For years, Sal would maintain that his mother was killed by a man, not a wild animal, even if his psychiatrist and father didn't believe him. After a fateful hospital visit, Sal had to adjust to a new life with his prosthetic face and internalized the nickname bullies give him: Sally Face. Sal's most notable feature is his prosthetic mask, primarily white with a light pink patch over his right eye. He has blue eyes; the right one is a prosthetic eye. From what has been seen of his face: he has a large scar running diagonally down the right side of his mouth, splitting his lips and exposing his teeth; a scar on his left cheek, as well as several other smaller scars scattered across the rest of his face; a dent on the right side of his lower jaw; and he is completely missing the cartilage in his nose. He has bright blue shoulder-length hair, which he usually wears in pigtails, and two piercings in each ear. He is noticeably short, being the second shortest in his group of friends. As a teenager, Sal wore a black sweater, ripped red jeans, and blue and white sneakers. In "Les Misérables," he wore a black hoodie, a pair of blue fingerless gloves, and green earmuffs while out in the snow. As an adult, he wears an outfit identical to the one he wore as a teenager and wears his hair down. His bangs have grown asymmetrically, and the right side covers his right eye. His prosthesis now has what are presumably pieces of tape holding them together. After his arrest, he wears a tattered orange jumpsuit with the prisoner num.

He is Sal's best friend and later his stepbrother. Larry had long, dark brown hair and tanned skin with yellowish tones. He also had brown eyes that always remained neutral unless he was experiencing strong emotions. He had a mole under his right eye and a gap between his teeth. He was usually seen wearing his light beige shirt with the "SF" logo, paired with blue jeans with a chain on the left side and dark brown shoes. In "The Wretched," he wore a red hoodie when he was outdoors. As a teenager (almost an adult), he had a more toned physique and a goatee. He wore a beige Sanity's Fall T-shirt, similar to the one he wore as a teenager, albeit with a slightly modified logo. Larry is strong-willed and sometimes quiet. He seems to get along well with others but isn't afraid to stand up for his beliefs. He also seems to care deeply about his friends.

Ashley has brown hair and green eyes. As a teenager, her hair was exceptionally long, reaching past her waist. She wore a purple sweater dress, dark grey leggings or pants, a black choker, and light greenish-grey shoes. As an adult, her hair has been cut short to accommodate riding her motorcycle. She wears a leather jacket, a purple short-sleeved shirt, and dark grey cut-off jeans. She also wears grey fingerless gloves and a necklace with a silver pendant. Ashley is shown to possess a very loyal and calm personality. After helping Sal with his bleeding face when punched by Travis Phelps, it is clear that she is quite kind-hearted and accepting of Sal even when his mask is absent, and helping with the bologna mystery. It should be noted that she is the only one in the group that does not believe in ghosts. She loves art and is the best artist in the group. Ashley is revealed to have been an old friend of Larry's and she is the one who taught him everything he knows about art.

Todd lives in the same apartment complex as Sal, in room 202. He is considered a techie, as evidenced by the large amount of technology he has in his room. Apparently, his parents considered it an excessive amount of technology and gave him a fish he named Bob to counteract all that technology. He is of average height, wears glasses, and has curly orange hair. Before being infected by Red-Eye, Todd was very pragmatic, intelligent, and calm. He was willing to help Sal ​​even after they met for the first time. This continued into his college days, when he welcomed Sal to move in with him and his boyfriend Neil and continued his research on the God-Eaters. After being infected by Red-Eye, Todd slowly began to lose his sanity and touch with reality. Todd meets Sal Fisher during a tutoring session with Ashley Campbell. When Ashley leaves, Sal asks Todd for help, and Todd agrees. Using Sal's walkie-talkie and Larry Johnson's police scanner antennas, he successfully modifies Sal's Gear Boy into the more efficient Super Gear Boy. Todd accompanies Sal to his apartment's bathroom to summon the ghost he believes lives there. The experiment is a success, summoning the weeping ghost of Greg Montague, who quickly flees upon sensing the proximity of the Red-Eyed Demon. Todd is initially shaken by the encounter, but willingly assists in the investigation into the murders of Sandy Sanderson by Charley Mansfield and Megan Holmes. His investigation reveals that the officers who arrested Mansfield were not registered with the Police Department, and that the arrested Charley bore no resemblance to the one living in Room 203. He also discovers an article about Megan Holmes's body being found by Wendigo Lake.

Travis has olive skin and blond hair, with one eye swollen (likely due to a bruise). In "Memories and Dreams," his hair has grown to his shoulders and his eyes are red from being possessed by the Shadow Plague. He wears a light purple shirt and blue shorts with green shoes and gray socks. At first glance, he is seen as a typical bully that tortures Sal, and is treated aggressively by the boy's friends in turn, but in actuality, he is a scared kid afraid of his own sexuality due to his zealot father. It is noted that Travis has no regards with how he treats other people as he has been shown to call Ash a "bitch" and later calls Sal and Larry "flamers" while also claiming he "thought he smelled trash" hinting at them in the cafeteria. Meaning not only does he bully Sal, but tries to insult the rest of the friend circle. His father had taught him all his life that feeling attracted to his own sex is abnormal and shameful. Thus, causing him to spout hateful comments towards others. Travis is afraid to be seen as a good child in the eyes of others, seeing it as a sign of weakness like his father sees homosexuality as weakness. Although he has doubts about his religion and its conflicting messages regarding the morality of his sexuality, he is usually a religious kid and tries to encourage others to attend the Phelps Ministry. Travis also appears to enjoy Bologna Day as was stated by Ashley to be "the crappiest lunch day
