Initially, Lightning is a racer who is arrogant, boastful, and self-assured, believing he can win the Piston Cup on his own without the help of any team or coach. His sponsors are Rust-eze, a small company that sells a soothing ointment for rusty old cars, which McQueen hates. However, he transforms into a more understanding and selfless character during his stay in Radiator Springs on Route 66.
