Annie Leonhardt (アニ・レオンハート Ani Reonhāto?) is a graduate of the 104th Training Corps and a former member of the Military Police Brigade. Her exceptional skills in swordsmanship and unarmed combat earned her 4th rank, but she is also noted to be a lone wolf who struggles to work with others. She possessed the ability to transform into a Titan known as the Female Titan. Trained from a young age by her father, she was selected as one of Marley's Warriors. In the year 845, she was sent on a mission to retrieve the Founding Titan, along with fellow Warriors Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover, and Marcel Galliard. As the Female Titan, she served as a major antagonist prior to her defeat, at which point she crystallized herself and was left in a comatose state. She was held underground in the custody of the Survey Corps for approximately four years before escaping during a battle between the Military, the Yeagerists, and the forces of Marley.

Annie is a young girl of considerably short height with a small yet very muscular build and physique. She has moderately short blonde hair that is often tied at the back, with her right fringe mainly draping over the right side of her face (though she tends to push it aside on occasion, possibly for better visibility); currently she wears it down and it falls slightly below her neck. She has an oval-shaped face, blue eyes, a Roman nose, and a pale complexion. Her hair is particularly pale and, when untied, reaches down to the nape of her neck. Her eyes, although of considerable size and proportion, often have a sullen vibe to their appearance. Annie's casual attire mainly consists of a hooded sweatshirt underneath a jacket, accompanied by dark gray pants. She is often seen in the Training Corps uniform and then the Military Police Brigade uniform after graduation. Though Annie frequently dons hooded sweatshirts as part of her standard attire, she also wears her signature white hooded sweatshirt as part of her standard military attire. During risky missions, it is implied that she always wears her silver ring, which has a small folding blade, on her right index finger; she uses the blade as her primary means of self-injury to transform into her Female Titan form at any time.

Annie's appearance as the Female Titan changed quite drastically, though her overall physique and facial features remained mostly the same. The Titan body consisted mainly of exposed muscle tissue, with noticeably limited skin coverage, and fingers made of bone. Along with a massive difference in height from Annie's human form, its face was lined with muscle, notably under the cheeks (giving it the ability to stretch its mouth far more than seemed possible), along with yellowish teeth. Compared to the majority of other Titans encountered, Annie's Female Titan form seemed much stronger and more physically fit, bearing a lean build with visible muscle definition.

Due to her harsh upbringing, Annie has become an isolated, exclusionary person; friendships do not come easily to her. She is rarely seen smiling and often has an emotionless expression. She is apathetic and somnolent, with little desire to put in any effort into meaningless disciplines or activities, and instead claims to focus exclusively on making it into the Military Police Brigade to obtain an easy life.[17] While Annie tends to have a realistic outlook on life,[18][19] she holds a fascination and even feelings of respect towards people who have a deep sense of duty and righteousness—people who devote their lives to and even die for causes they believe in. Annie's sense of humor tends to be mocking, sarcastic, deadpan, and surprising. It also sometimes expresses a partial truth, and it mostly occurs in intense situations. For example, when she was cornered by the Survey Corps in front of an underground passage, she claimed to be a feeble maiden and mocked Eren as a suicidal blockhead. Despite Annie's usually cold and calm demeanor, she is capable of expressing her feelings in various ways. When she does lose her composure, she usually reacts with violence. She beats up Reiner Braun for his cowardice after Marcel was eaten and for trying to manipulate her into continuing a mission that, in her view, had already failed. Also, while exhausted by her spy work and constantly avoiding hand-to-hand combat training, Annie is angered when he pushes her to take the training seriously, to the point she uses her fighting style on him, despite his protests and her already having demonstrated it on Eren at Reiner's bidding. While outwardly callous, Annie has expressed levels of guilt and shock, most notably when apologizing to a certain corpse after the battle of Trost and when Reiner emotionally manipulated her to help him kill Marco.

After Annie's birth, a blood test revealed she was a Subject of Ymir, suggesting her mother had an affair with an Eldian man. While her mother's fate is unknown, Annie was deported to an internment zone and later adopted by Leonhart, who had been relocated for similar reasons. Her adoptive father intended to train her to become a Warrior so that he could live a privileged life. Thus, from a young age, Annie underwent rigorous combat training with Leonhart. Annie would eventually become as strong as he wanted; but in retaliation for all she had endured, she attacked him and left him permanently crippled. The brutal training she endured left her callous towards others, unable to find any value in whether one lived or died. At some point in her childhood, Annie joined the Marleyan military as a Warrior candidate, meeting comrades such as Bertolt Hoover, Reiner Braun, and Marcel Galliard. Annie was praised for her impeccable fighting abilities and was later chosen as one of seven promising candidates to inherit the power of the Titans. She was later granted the power of the Female Titan in accordance with her stellar combat skills. Alongside the rest of her Warrior comrades, the six Titans under Marley's command used their powers to crush an entire nation, testing their abilities in the process. The six Warriors proved themselves to be more effective weapons than their predecessors, largely alleviating Marley's concerns about entrusting the upcoming Paradis Island Operation to children.

Annie was selected as one of the four Warriors to carry out this mission, along with the Jaw, Armored, and Colossus Titans. The objective of the mission was to attack the Eldians living within the Walls and lure out and steal the Founding Titan. Before leaving Marley to begin the Paradis Island Operation, Annie was paraded through the streets in a horse-drawn carriage with Reiner, Bertolt, and Marcel and celebrated as a Warrior to save the world from the people of Paradis Island.[51] Around this time, Leonhart apologized to Annie. Finally seeing her as his true daughter, he regretted his actions in making her become a Warrior and begged her to promise him to come home.[52][46] After arriving at the border of Paradis Island, Magath gave a final debriefing to the Warriors before they departed for the Walls on horseback.

Long ago, humans were just food for the titans. Until humans built three giant walls around their country. Wall Rose is the second outermost Wall following Wall Maria. It was breached by the Colossus Titan 5 years after the fall of Wall Maria, but the breach was later sealed by military efforts of the three branches and help from the Attack Titan. Wall Sina is the innermost Wall protecting the kingdom where the king and other civilians reside. The cities of Wall Sina are protected by the Military Police serving under the king. The underground is poorer and more prone to criminal activity. Wall Maria is the outermost Wall of the human kingdom. Like the other Walls, Wall Maria is approximately 50 meters in height. Five years ago, it was breached, after a century of peace and prosperity, and was lost to the Titans. The human military against the Titans is divided into three divisions: the Survey Corps, which explores the areas outside the Walls; the Garrison, which patrols and maintains the Walls, preventing Titans from entering the Walls in case the gates are breached, primarily to delay and distract the Titans; and the Military Police, high-ranking soldiers who serve as personal guards for the King and maintain order within the Walls. The Survey Corps (調査兵団 Chōsa Heidan?) was the branch of the Paradisan military most actively involved in direct combat with and study of the Titans. Due to their constant expeditions, the Survey Corps' soldiers were the most proficient in the use of the 3D Maneuvering Gear and the Anti-Personnel Spatial Maneuvering Device. Despite little success from their activities, the members of the organization still symbolized the "hope of humanity", and their insignia was known as the "Wings of Freedom". The Survey Corps' goal was to someday change the world and take back what was taken from humanity.

Garrison (駐屯兵団 Chūton Heidan?) is the most numerous, but also the least qualified (except for elite units) branch of the military. Due to the high mortality rate of the Survey Corps and the high competition for recruitment into the Military Police, people most often prefer it. The main task is to protect the Walls during an attack by the Giants and the subsequent evacuation of the civilian population. Secondary: organizing order, patrolling, repairing defensive structures. In the battle for Trost, the Garrison fighters not only defend the walls, but also independently clear out the captured areas. It was they, along with the cadets, who participated in the defense of Trost, only then the Survey Corps cleared out the city. The Military Police (憲兵団 Kenpeidan?) is the most prestigious branch of the military. This is because their job allows them to live within the inner walls, in safety. The Military Police have a lot of resources, and their power is greater than that of the Garrison and the Survey Corps. In reality, the Military Police have a complete lack of supervision and discipline, abuse of power can be seen everywhere, they have a bad relationship with the Garrison and almost hateful with the Survey Corps. Only the top ten cadets can get into this branch of the military, but judging by the conversation between Boris and Hitch, there are other, illegal ways to get into the police. Most titans are pretty stupid, but despite this, killing even one titan is quite problematic. Only one weak spot has been discovered in titans - the neck. If you cut even part of a titan's neck, it dies immediately.
