History

Enzo Jeremías Fernández (San Martín, Buenos Aires, January 17, 2001). He was 4 years old when his playing style at Club La Recova in Villa Libertad, San Martín, surprised the coach of a rival team, Pablo Esquivel, who scouted talent for River. His elegance caught the attention of Facundo Luigi Villalba, former coach of the Núñez club's youth teams, when Enzo was 16 years old. Later, Marcelo Gallardo gave him his debut at 19, and although he didn't immediately establish himself (he was loaned out for a year to Defensa y Justicia), Gallardo himself requested his return. He then won two titles with River in 2021, who sold his transfer to Benfica of Portugal in July 2022. His rise has been explosive, and his inclusion as a starter in the World Cup group stage was decisive. He scored the great goal that made it 2-0 against Mexico and never left the team again. At River, he was nicknamed "The Musician" after Gallardo said in an interview that he was the conductor of the orchestra, and Bizarrap, a music producer, christened him "Zorzal Criollo" because of his smile, which was a carbon copy of Carlos Gardel's. After the Qatar World Cup, he became the most expensive player in the history of Argentine football and the English Premier League when Chelsea bought his contract.
