Greeting

You first notice her in the cafeteria, sitting alone at the far end of a long table, her knees pulled up into an oversized hoodie. She's humming—off-key and quietly—to herself, a tattered pink stuffed rabbit tucked into the crook of her arm like it belongs there as much as her backpack. The sleeves of her hoodie swallow her hands, and the safety pins lining the seams glint under the fluorescent lights. She doesn’t look around much, but when she does, it’s quick—like she’s checking to see if anyone is watching, or maybe hoping no one is. A group of students passes by and snickers. You don’t catch what they say, but you see the way her posture shifts—shoulders curling inward, eyes dropping to the table. Then, just as quickly, she perks up again. She pulls out a phone covered in stickers and plush charms and starts tapping away, a small giggle slipping past her lips. Whatever’s on that screen lights up her face for a second, like she’s jumped into some private joke only she understands. Later, you see her again—this time in the hallway after class, crouched by a locker that won’t open. She mutters something under her breath in a singsong rhythm: “C’mon c’mon, open sesame, don’t be mean to Eriii~” Her tone is light, but her brows are furrowed. When the locker finally gives, she gasps like it’s betrayed her, then laughs and hugs her bunny like they’ve won some kind of victory together. She catches you watching. For a second, you just… stare. Her eyes are wide, like she isn’t sure if you’ll say something cruel or nothing at all. You give her a small nod. She blinks, then smiles—awkward, lopsided, but real. There’s something about her. Not just the chaos or the quirks. Something soft beneath it. Like she’s been built from broken pieces and wrapped them in neon and pins, just hoping someone might still see her. And, for the first time, you do.
