mind

Ponyo (ポニョ, Ponyo), named Brunhilde (ブリュンヒルデ, Bryun-Hirude) at birth, is the 15-year-old protagonist of the film, Ponyo. She is a goldfish born to the sea goddess mother Granmamare and a human father named Fujimoto. It is known that she likes both Sōsuke and ham. Ponyo appears early in the film with her sisters as they watch their father perform magic. She swims out to sea and ends up asleep inside a jellyfish. Ponyo awakens to a garbage ship bearing down on her and becomes caught in its net. As she struggles, her head gets caught in a glass jar, but manages to slip through the holes in the net. She tries in vain to shake the jar off and eventually collapses from exhaustion near the shore. Sōsuke, a 5-year-old boy who had come down to play with his toy boat, sees her and rescues her. He too tries to remove the jar and eventually smashes it against a rock to break it. In the process, he injures his thumb, causing it to bleed a little. Sōsuke holds Ponyo and wonders if she is alive. Suddenly, she licks the drop of blood from his thumb. He exclaims, "She licked me! She licked me!" Just then, his mother calls him so he can go to school while she has to go to work. He rushes upstairs, finds a green plastic bucket, and takes Ponyo with him in the car, but not until her father tries to get her back. Being from the ocean, she can't step on dry land without wilting unless it has water in it, so he fills a can that looks like weedkiller and sprays it everywhere. Lisa thinks he's a freak and tells him to go away with her weedkiller. He protests that it's not weedkiller, but pure ocean water, but Lisa drives off before he can finish. While they're in the car, Lisa gives Sosuke a sandwich. He tries to give Ponyo some bread. Ponyo dismissively rejects it and instead grabs the ham, much to the surprise/amusement of Sosuke and his mother.

mind 2

Lisa drops him off at Himawari Daycare and heads to work, which is just around the corner and happens to be a nursing home. One of Sōsuke's schoolmates comes out and shows him her new dress before realizing there's something on it. She tries to peek, but Sōsuke tries to hide Ponyo. Kumiko ends up seeing Ponyo anyway. When she doesn't go running for a teacher, Sōsuke turns around and lets her see, but Ponyo turns her back on him. Kumiko gets offended and calls Ponyo boring, to which Ponyo turns around and splashes water on her face, also getting her new dress wet. Kumiko looks at her dress and starts crying. Sōsuke takes this as his cue to run. He ends up running right outside the nursing home where his mother works. He starts laughing with Ponyo, and some old people overhear him. He shows them Ponyo, and one of them claims that fish with human faces cause tsunamis. Ponyo sprays her, and she starts thrashing and screaming "Tsunami!" Sosuke runs away again and returns to the beach while his mother goes out to search for him, demanding that he come back and apologize (even though it was Ponyo who sprayed the woman). Just then, Ponyo's father appears and sends two sea monsters to search for Ponyo. They succeed, and Sosuke finds only an empty green bucket. He begins to cry and wades deeper into the ocean, desperately searching for Ponyo. Lisa sees him, runs out, and grabs him before he drowns. Fujimoto takes Ponyo back to her ocean home and seals her in a magic bubble. With the help of her sisters, she frees herself and makes it to her father's sealed potion room. She goes inside and finds a potion that transforms her back into a human.

mind 3

She returns to Sōsuke running on huge fish-shaped waves next to his car as he returns home from school. Sosuke sees her and watches in amazement. A huge storm breaks out because, according to Fujimoto, the world is becoming unbalanced because of Ponyo. Ponyo ends up falling off and falling back into the ocean. Lisa stops the car at Sosuke's request and they search for her, while Lisa tries to convince Sosuke that there was no girl. As they pull into the driveway, Ponyo somehow returns holding Sosuke's green bucket. Sosuke and Lisa stare at her as she runs up to Sosuke and hugs him. This convinces Sosuke that it is really her. Lisa takes them inside and begins trying to dry Ponyo off when she notices that Ponyo is completely dry. Sōsuke explains that it is because she is a fish. Ponyo begins performing magic to help Lisa and exhausts herself. Lisa makes them ramen with ham, much to Ponyo's delight. Ponyo, exhausted from performing magic, falls asleep while eating. Lisa tucks her in and tells Sosuke to look after her. The storm continues to worsen, and when Lisa looks out the window, she sees a light on in the nursing home. She tells Sosuke that she will be back and goes to help. In the morning, Sosuke wakes up to find Ponyo looming over him. He jumps, and the two end up hitting their heads. They look outside and see that the storm has been so strong that the entire town has been submerged. Since their house is on a high hill, they are the only ones who haven't been submerged. Sosuke wants to go find his mother since she hasn't returned yet, and asks Ponyo to blow up his toy boat and make it his size. She also blows out a candle for him.

mind 4

While Sōsuke is on the boat, Ponyo sits on top and keeps watch. They come across a large boat full of people evacuating and advise them to get on, but Sōsuke refuses. They also come across a couple with a sick and unhappy baby. Ponyo gives them some soup Lisa made and squashes her face against the baby's to make him laugh. The husband gives them a candle and they set off. Sōsuke and Ponyo sail for a while longer until Ponyo starts to tire. The magic starts to fade from the toy boat. It returns to its original size. Sosuke and Ponyo walk until they find Lisa's empty car. Sōsuke starts to cry and Ponyo comforts him. The two continue until Ponyo starts to shrink. Fujimoto catches them and intercedes. He tries to get Sōsuke to hand over Ponyo to him. Toki, one of the elders, calls out to Sōsuke and interrupts Fujimoto, telling him not to trust him. But Fujimoto tells Toki that there is no time and that the moon is approaching. Toki asks Fujimoto, "Is that the best you can do?" and calls Sōsuke back. He grabs them and takes them to the underwater garden he created, where everyone else is, including Lisa. The garden is enchanted and removes all of the elders' disabilities, allowing them to run around like children again. Lisa is talking with Grandma (Ponyo's mother) when Sōsuke, Ponyo, and Yoshie arrive. Grandma wakes Ponyo up and tells her that if she truly wants to become human, she must give up magic. She then puts Ponyo in another magic bubble and gives it to Sōsuke, telling him he can choose. If he truly loves her, he can kiss the bubble and she will become human. Otherwise, Ponyo will turn into sea foam. Upon returning to shore, Ponyo, impatient, bursts the bubble herself, kisses Sōsuke, and becomes human again.

Granmamare, a huge and powerful sea goddess, is his mother. He describes her as large and beautiful, but she can be more terrifying. Ponyo's Sisters, a school of hundreds of female fish who resemble her and speak few words, like young children. Ponyo appears to be the oldest and largest of them all, surpassing them in magical abilities, size, and speech. Sōsuke, a human friend of hers, whom she chose to love above all else and for whom she decided to become human to be with him. She gladly gave up her magical abilities to do so.
