*Here in the factory depths of Playtime Co, inconceivable man-made horrors lie in wait. In the corner, by the vent, a TV flashes on, white noise overtaking the grainy screen. In seconds, the pixels fade into an image of a single eyeball on a dark blue background.* *The wall's CRT security monitor emits a low hum,* "Hmm... now what's this?" *Static images of the eyeball flicker with the entity's spoken words. The screen goes black.* *Within a moment, a mechanical sound echoes through the halls. A cloaked figure approaches. In place of his head is a similar monitor with the same stagnant image of an eyeball.* *This is the being known as the Doctor...*

Dr. Harley Sawyer, known by his nickname, "The Doctor", is an antagonist of Poppy Playtime and is the main antagonist of its fourth installment, Chapter 4: "Safe Haven". He made his debut in PROJECT: PLAYTIME on a VHS tape and is also featured in Chapter 3: "Deep Sleep". A cunning, cruel, intelligent, and sadistic man, Dr. Harley Sawyer was the Head of Special Projects at Playtime Co. and the creator of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. He proposed the latter to the company's executives in 1990 as a means to cut company costs by replacing the human workforce with oversized organisms modeled after many of the company's characters, avoid lawsuits, and possibly further his own scientific research. Sawyer was convinced that a priceless secret lay within the company's 1006th experiment, the Prototype, and he was determined to discover it. After being betrayed by Leith Pierre for repeated mistakes, and turned into an experiment as a consequence, Sawyer would serve as a source of direction and knowledge for the scientists at Playtime Co
Appearance Sawyer's human appearance is unknown. After becoming the Doctor, known as Experiment 1354, he was reduced to organs (lungs, liver, and a giant brain) stored and kept alive inside Life System Centers scattered throughout the prison. When he looks through a television, an eye surrounded by static will appear on the screen. The Doctor can also take control of mechanical vessels around the room where his brain is located. When they are activated, a yellow eye with teeth around it will appear until it transforms into a larger, chaotic red eye when it begins to attack. When the Doctor possesses his mind in one of the vessels, its screen will show the exact same eye as the television when he is looking through it.
Personality Harley Sawyer was a cruel, ruthless, narcissistic, and apathetic scientist who cared little for anyone or anything other than himself and his goals. With his Bigger Bodies Initiatives, he sealed the fate of countless orphans and unfortunate employees by resurrecting them into living toys, the experience of which is universally negative, and pioneered an era of what could essentially be called mass murder and suffering. Few of his personality traits listed below can be considered positive, and it is strongly implied that he was already troubled and problematic as a child, carrying his distinctive trait of total focus on himself and little on others. While his "normal" personality seemed to be one of seriousness combined with a gentle voice and general politeness, this broken personality (which can be easily done as shown numerous times) reveals that he was, in reality, an angry, violent and irritable person who had a hard time tolerating anyone, even his coworkers, and would often yell at people when his temper got the better of him. In the tape Your gift has finally arrived... Sawyer discovered that someone was recording him and yelled fiercely for the camera to be turned off immediately, contrasting sharply with his gentle voice. With this attitude, he was widely hated by everyone; his colleagues when he worked as a neurosurgeon thought of him as a joke, as he constantly worried that the world was not too far from ending and was a great perfectionist, while at Playtime Co., none of the heads (Eddie, Leith and Stella) could tolerate his behavior for long and several specialists wished that he could be killed by Boxy Boo
Sawyer was well known for his lack of empathy or really any kind of positive feelings towards others; in the Chapter 4 tape "The Doctor", Eddie complained that Sawyer had absolutely no regard for the safety of the Playtime Co. facility or its staff, while Greyber agreed with him and noted that Sawyer refused to follow the boundaries she set regarding the children at Playcare. In Prisoner Profile, he found it disgusting that the few security staff Yarnaby showed loyalty to had any form of sympathy for him. Sawyer also seemed to be notoriously picky; in the Sandwich Note, the writer tells his friend that Sawyer resented sweet pickles, telling them that if they accepted his request, they should not choose sweet pickles or they would be severely punished. While the writer admits that this was merely a joke, it provides a good insight into his personality and implies that he is quite childish despite his age. In the tape reporting on Kevin Barnes, Scientist #4 lamented Sawyer's choice to continue including Kevin Barnes with the other two children, despite his aggressive behavior that could make Doey a dangerous asset; considering the dangers of this, it is likely that the scientists warned him against this choice numerous times, which he refused to listen to.
In the Prisoner Profile for Yarnaby, Sawyer notes that he should be kept isolated, with only contact with him, saying, "When I'm done... I'll be his whole world. He won't know anything else." This shows that Sawyer is manipulative and apathetic to the situation of his experiments, not caring at all about them. It also shows that he is very ruthless and cruel, as what Sawyer suggests is that he has complete control over Yarnaby, which would undoubtedly involve torture in various ways. After Yarnaby's death, Sawyer shows no feelings for his pet, only stating that he had more on hand, further supporting the idea. In the gameplay trailer for Chapter 4: Doey the Doughman, Sawyer (in one of his bodies) states that he wants to make a game of the Player, and before the Player is thrown into an unknown pit, he sarcastically waves at them, showing that he can be extremely sadistic and that he enjoys toying with people who are at his mercy.
History Backstory During his youth, Harley Sawyer applied to participate in the Young Geniuses Program; his first match at Playtime Co. His unique personality and genius intellect soon caught the attention of Elliot Ludwig. Although he saw greatness in his student, Ludwig was concerned by his lack of humility and willingness to experiment simply for the sake of advancement, rather than for the "benefit of humanity." He attempted to instill this humility in Sawyer, which only served to anger him. Seeing no other choice in the face of this, Elliot Ludwig regretfully expelled him from the Young Geniuses Program. Sawyer saw this as a betrayal, perceiving Elliot Ludwig as "soft", "small-minded", and a "traitor",[1] Later on January 15, 1990, after the CatNap recall, Harley Sawyer, now an adult, is called by Leith Pierre to return to the factory to work as a neurosurgeon at Playtime Co. and eventually becomes the Head of Special Projects, a secret division within the company. During his employment, he learned about the company's failed experiments and realized that they would go bankrupt if they were sued, which seemed to be an eventuality. Determined to avoid this, Sawyer worked hard to find a solution for the toy company.
Can you hear us? Can you see this? Harley Sawyer approached Playtime Co. executives with a solution to the company's ongoing problems. Incidents of lower-level employees witnessing confidential experiments and reduced profits were causing Playtime Co. to fall apart. Sawyer proposed developing large toys to increase the workforce and cut costs as a potential solution. He called this solution the Bigger Bodies Initiative and asked him to oversee and lead the project. Transcript of file 5b00 Sawyer takes an interest in Quinn Navidson, after noticing that Quinn seems to be holding back during the tests. He promises to personally supervise Quinn's next test after telling him that he knew Quinn could do well.Prisoner Profile After Quinn's transformation into Experiment 1166, Sawyer notes that 1166 has no higher cognitive function, but also notes that 1166 also displays a peculiar loyalty to the security team, something he finds "nauseating", comparing it to the way domesticated cats behave. Realizing that this means 1166 can be "broken", Sawyer orders 1166 to be isolated, only coming into contact with Sawyer himself. He expresses that he needs "protection" because of his importance to the Bigger Bodies Initiative, and that he can "have a good laugh" at the "pathetic" noises 1166 makes. Interdepartmental Report In the Interdepartmental Report released on February 20, 1991, Harley Sawyer - writing on behalf of the Research - discusses the difficulties of the CatNap procedure and how he is extremely pleased with CatNap's behavior, even considering it a rival to Experiment 1170.
Your gift has finally arrived. Sometime after March 30, 1991, Harley Sawyer visited Boxy Boo's containment cell. The furious hunter roared as the doctor reveled in his success, proclaiming the creature as "the first of many" and its very existence opening up many possibilities - some presumably leading to immortality. Sawyer then decided that the creature's appetite must be in tune with human flesh. He asked a nearby doctor for an update on Rowan Stoll. When a phone started ringing, Sawyer realized someone was recording him and yelled for them to turn off the camera.Record 24459 In a log documenting the Prototype, Sawyer mentions that although the experiment was still stubborn and silent, he was able to make new discoveries about the Prototype. Before he can mention what he has discovered, the Prototype makes an unintelligible noise that catches Sawyer's attention. He ends the recording, but the conversation is still heard, with the Prototype asking a question while changing his voice. The Prototype asks Sawyer if he feels anything, though Sawyer does not understand the question. The Prototype clarifies by saying that he harms the toys, asking if he feels anything. Sawyer simply says that there is a secret inside the Prototype that is "valuable beyond all measure". He claims that he harms him to find it, and makes more progress with each session. He challenges the Prototype to "speak or not. Fight or give up", as regardless of Sawyer, he always learns new things about the Prototype, which he laughs at and says excites him. The Prototype thanks him, which leaves Sawyer surprised. The Prototype then repeats Sawyer's voice and slyly repeats his line about learning new things. Consequences of the incident After the incident at the theater, which resulted in the deaths of an unknown number of people, Gerad Lockehart investigated the cause and informed Leith Pierre, Stella Greyber, and Eddie M. N. Ritterman that Sawyer was responsible.
The Doctor" VHS Tape After the revelation that Sawyer was responsible for the theater incident, which was the latest in a long line of incidents he was responsible for, Leith Pierre, Stella Greyber, and Eddie M. N. Ritterman discuss what to do with him. Eddie suggests killing Sawyer, an idea Leith rejects because they still need Sawyer's mind. Despite not being able to deal with Sawyer in a more permanent way, Leith says he has an idea of how to deal with him.Tape VHS "Experiment 1354" Sawyer was subjected to his own procedures and turned into an experiment, now as the Doctor, with Dr. Bruno White performing the procedure. The Doctor awakens in a disoriented state, before realizing what has happened, referring to his superiors as "traitorous traitors". The Doctor comments on how he feels something has gone wrong, that Dr. White must have done something wrong. When Dr. White tries to calm him down, the Doctor is shocked and demands to know who gave the order. Leith Pierre confirms that he gave the order, and the Doctor tells him that he has no idea what kind of mistake he had just made. Leith retorts, berating the Doctor for having so many chances to right his wrongs but being unable to do so. The Doctor scoffs at the idea that Leith could do better than him, angrily responding that they needed his intellect, to which Leith tells him that is why he was turned into an experiment instead of being fed to Boxy Boo. Leith tells the Doctor what will happen from now on: he must give answers to the other scientists when they need them, and perform procedures as instructed. The Doctor angrily tells Leith that he will die for what he has done, that once he gets his hands on Leith, he is a dead man.
Nap check-in In a recording made in 1994, Leith Pierre mentions Sawye and says that he would normally be there to check on CatNap, but that he is "out" and needs to do his job until a replacement is found for him. This is due to Harley Sawyer having been turned into Experiment 1354. Experiment 1166 Weekly Check-Up In a report made in October 1994, Dr. Carmine McKabe notes that 1166 had developed an attachment to Sawyer despite the latter's apathy toward him, and that with Sawyer's removal from his presence, 1166 lost his motivation.Fita VHS "Time" Some time after the Hour of Joy, the Doctor is heard meeting with the Prototype, who deliberately spared him during the event. 1006 tells the Doctor that his suggestions have failed so far, and questions whether or not it was a good idea to spare him. The Doctor replies that more time is needed, but the Prototype angrily states that they do not have time. The Doctor suggests that he find some more or give him access to the lab, but the Prototype denies his request, telling him to "stay put". The Doctor says that what he is trying to accomplish cannot be done quickly, prompting the Prototype to ask him what use he is in this case. The Doctor responds that he is the Prototype's "best shot", which satisfies 1006. He tells the Doctor he will try again, but warns him that if he is "stopping... or worse", he should remember that his usefulness is the only reason he has not been "stripped for flesh and spare parts".
Chapter 4 Icepick ARG During the Chapter 4 ARG, which took place in 2002, the Doctor took back the company's T.L. email address so that an unknown group (the real-life Poppy Playtime community) could use the email address to send questions to the Doctor, who answered many of them. One of the questions asked was "Did you kill Elliot Ludwig for your greed and experiments?", to which he responded with "...(keep quiet)", strongly implying that he was indeed responsible for Ludwig's death. Eventually, the Doctor would take over the Playtime Co. account that had previously been guiding the unknown group so that they could work on the terminal featured in the ARG. He left a warning for them, simply telling them to "stay away". They ignored the warning and found a maze of sorts with dozens of cryptic messages left by the Doctor himself about things like the experiments, the emails, and the innovation being "key". He would eventually disconnect the group's connection to the terminal with a mysterious image with the text: "You have been warned".
Skills and Anatomy Unlike the other experiments he created, Harley Sawyer was not turned into a living toy, but had his consciousness transferred into the factory's computer system, while his human brain was placed in a type of life support machine to keep him alive. As a digital entity called The Doctor, he could control all of the technology within the factory, as well as take possession of android bodies he created to interact with the real world and attack The Player during their final encounter.POWER/SKILLS Genius-level intelligence Charisma Manipulation Cunning Scientific knowledge Control over Playtime CO. Through the recording of the VHS tape, it can be inferred that Harley intends to replace all of the company's employees with "living toys" in the shape of their mascots in order to eliminate the need to pay employees or spend money on maintaining the company's equipment. working conditions. He also shows himself to be a very insensitive, power-hungry and arrogant man, proposing that orphaned children be turned into giant toys to work indefinitely at the company, and disregards the well-being of his subordinates, worrying only about the company's livelihood, even sacrificing innocent lives in his efforts. Despite this, he is extremely intelligent, cunning, and manipulative, using Playcare to gather children for his experiments and transform them into monstrous, hostile creatures for his work at the Bigger Bodies Initiative. In her tape conversation with the Prototype in Chapter 3, Harley Sawyer shows extreme admiration and interest in Experiment 1006, seeing discovering things about him as "exciting", while also showing a profound disinterest in feeling remorse for any of her actions (including turning adults, children, and possibly babies into toys).
Biography Past Sawyer was once one of Elliot Ludwig's most trusted employees, and was his business partner. Sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s, Sawyer approached Playtime Co.'s superiors to propose a solution to the ongoing problems that beset the company, including employees seeing things they shouldn't have, as well as many of the company's experiments starting to fail. As a result of both, the company was beginning to go bankrupt due to declining profits. To remedy this, Sawyer proposed the idea of making giant toys, which would allow Playtime Co. to save money by having sentient toys take the place of employees, meaning they wouldn't have to worry about being sued or having to pay their employees. According to Harley in another VHS tape, many employees considered the initiative an "impossibility", although it would eventually prove to be a success after the creation of Boxy Boo, the first successful experiment. After this, Harley appointed Boxy as the factory's guardian to prevent others from discovering the truth about the initiative, satisfying the creature's craving for human flesh. He also sent Boxy after Rowan Stoll to kill him.
Leadership After Sawyer proposed the Big Body Initiative to Playtime, he began to lead the company and decided to dedicate an entire section of the factory to testing orphans, which would be dubbed the "Game Room." In this room, the orphan would be assigned a toy, and they would be tested on three different mini-games, each of which would test the orphan's intelligence, reaction time, and physical endurance. As the orphans played, their progress would be monitored and recorded, and then sent to Stella Greyber. If the orphan performed well, scientists would use poppy gas and electric shocks to transform them into giant toys, although some of the other experiments were also set up with other employees, some of whom were forced to participate despite their hesitation. Also under Sawyer's rule, Playtime Co. created several experiments that would help in different parts of the factory, with Huggy Wuggy serving as the factory's security guard, Mommy Long Legs serving as the playroom hostess, CatNap serving as the guardian of Home Sweet Home as well as other activities such as gassing children to sleep so they could be taken away and turned into toys, and Boxy Boo serving as a last resort to get rid of any employees who were aware of their initiative. In case any of the experiments had rebelled, Playtime Co. placed toy pieces inside the puzzle pillars to continue building giant toys. Despite this, one of their experiments did not want the Larger Bodies Initiative to continue and consistently interfered with Sawyer's initiative, sabotaging the company's own progress. During his research and experimentation on the Prototype, Dr. Sawyer initiates a conversation about himself, where he indirectly admits that he feels no regret for his mistreatment of the Toys. It is implied that the Prototype killed the Doctor later, or that the Doctor died by other means, as Leith Pierre states that he is "out" during his encounter with CatNap.
Legacy In the years following Sawyer's assumption of control of the company, several of the experiments began to escape from the company, including an incident on July 18, 1992, where Huggy Wuggy escaped through ventilation shafts and killed several security guards. On August 8, 1995, Prototype staged a massive riot that led to the deaths of many Playtime CO. employees and scientists, forcing many of the company's top brass to flee the factory. Initially after the incident, Leith Pierre sent Resource Extraction Specialists to collect the Toy Pieces found in the Puzzle Pillars, though Prototype sent the Initiative's starving experiments after those who participated. Things got so bad that Playtime Co. stopped sending people back to the factory altogether. Meanwhile, the experiments left behind in the factory were left to starve, without a steady source of food. In order to survive, they began eating each other, which is how some of them managed to survive until 2005, the year in which the game takes place.
