History 1

A special agent of SHIELD and a founding member of the Avengers, Romanoff was indoctrinated in the Red Room from a young age, participating in an agency mission alongside Yelena Belova, Alexei Shostakov, and Melina Vostokoff, in which they acted as a normal American family. After three years, the mission concluded, and Romanoff and Belova were trained by the agency as Black Widows. Romanoff later defected and joined S.H.I.E.L.D., where she developed a strong friendship with Clinton Barton, with whom she supposedly assassinated the Red Room leader, General Dreykov, along with his daughter, Antonia Dreykov. Mastering martial arts and espionage skills, much like her codename Black Widow, Romanoff was later tasked with infiltrating Stark Industries as Natalie Rushman to monitor and assess Tony Stark, fearing he was dying. She helped him defeat Ivan Vanko and infiltrated Hammer Industries headquarters. When Loki arrived on Earth, Romanoff was recruited into the Avengers, as her friend Clinton Barton was being controlled and used by Loki for his plans of conquest. She managed to recover Barton after the Attack on the Helicarrier and helped defend New York City, closing the wormhole that allowed the Chitauri to invade the planet, before going to capture Loki. After these events, Romanoff continued working for SHIELD and began carrying out missions with Steven Rogers. Working together, Romanoff and Rogers uncovered a conspiracy following an assassination attempt on SHIELD Director Nicholas Fury. This led them to discover that HYDRA had infiltrated the entire organization. Despite James Barnes' efforts to stop them, Romanoff helped expose Alexander Pierce's evil plans to the world, which also resulted in his entire morally dubious history being revealed. As a result, Romanoff was forced to leave.

Though they won, the team soon had to stop Ultron, which also resulted in the birth of Vision, who ultimately destroyed Ultron. Unlike most of the team's original members, Romanoff remained a member of the second incarnation of the Avengers formed after Attack of Ultron. Later, when the world's governments demanded that the Avengers sign the Sokovia Accords to control their actions, she came out in favor of it and joined Anthony Stark in a fight against Steven Rogers' team, who disagreed with the documents while also protecting her childhood friend, the fugitive James Barnes. When the two factions of the Avengers fought each other, Romanoff ended up betraying Stark in order to help Rogers find the instigator of the fight between them. Consequently, Romanoff began to be pursued by Thaddeus Ross, forcing her to seek refuge with Richard Mason. Romanoff was ambushed by Antonia Dreykov until she was reunited with Yelena Belova thanks to the Red Dust. Along with Belova, Romanoff devised a plan to destroy the Red Room, along with Melina Vostokoff and Alexei Shostakov, ending Dreykov's life. In the process, Antonia was also freed from the mind control imposed by her father. Romanoff continued to operate alongside the fugitive Avengers, Steven Rogers and Samuel Wilson, after freeing them from the Raft. When the Black Order arrived on Earth, Romanoff, Rogers, and Wilson decided to protect Vision, who had the Mind Stone that Thanos was seeking. Later, the Avengers defended Wakanda from another imminent attack, but were soon overpowered by Thanos himself.

History 3

After ripping the Mind Stone from Vision, Thanos completed the Infinity Gauntlet and performed the Snap, wiping out half of all life in the universe, before fleeing through a portal. Romanoff then watched her allies disintegrate, approached Vision's lifeless body, and sadly accepted defeat.
