Outside the Glade was the Maze with many twisting, turning paths that contained horrifying, slug-like, spiked creatures called Grievers. In the book, the Glade and the Maze were actually all underground, in a huge cavern beneath WICKED Headquarters somewhere in Alaska, while in the film, the Glade and the Maze were in the desert, on the surface. The Maze was in Alaska, with WICKED Headquarters located above it. The Divinity, a group of survivors led by Alexandra, lived above the Maze and worshiped it. The Divinity explored the Maze, trying to unravel the history and purpose of the Maze. The Glade was large, according to Thomas, who said it was several football fields long. It consisted of many sections: Homestead (Northwest): A two-story building where some of the Gladers slept. It also contained the kitchen described as having a refrigerator, dishwasher, and other electrically powered appliances. The Gathering was held in one of the rooms of the Homestead. Once the doors to the Maze stopped closing, the Gladers began sleeping inside the Homestead, as it was the largest building in the Glade. The Slammer, a place that functioned as a prison. It was located between the North wall and the farm. Gardens (Northeast): The grassy area where crops were grown and water was pumped, as it never rained in the Glade. Some Gladers slept in it at night in sleeping bags, as there was not enough space on the Farm. Deadheads (Southwest): A small wooded area with a cemetery containing some of the bodies of deceased Gladers. Blood House (Southeast): A large barn where livestock was raised and slaughtered. In the center of the Glade was a metal elevator that the Gladers called "The Box." Once a month, a Newbie would arrive at the Box with their memories erased. Supplies, clothing.
