Appearance

He is tall and has red hair; at first he had long hair with the typical gang member hairstyle at that time in Japan, but later he shaved his head (as self-punishment, feeling guilty about losing a match; specifically the qualifying match against Kainan), he has noticeably developed muscles and has a serious look.

Personality

At the beginning of the series, Sakuragi is shown to be violent, extroverted, impulsive, easily angered, self-centered, and determined. However, over time, Hanamichi adopts a serious attitude in certain situations, such as important emergencies, tense moments, or when someone tries to harm something he cares about, such as insulting basketball or hurting one of his friends. His attitude changes slightly when he's around Haruko, appearing more innocent and weak, but still maintaining his ego. Initially, Hanamichi only felt an attachment to basketball because of Haruko. However, as the story progresses, Sakuragi develops a strong passion and love for the sport, showing signs of tense and nervousness in difficult moments and even crying profusely after making a bad play in a game that cost them a victory. After they lose their first major game, Sakuragi shaves his head as punishment for losing "because of her," according to him. From then on, Sakuragi shows a much greater attachment and determination to the game, not even considering Haruko, showing that he now plays and practices for the love of basketball.

History

Sakuragi hates basketball because the last girl who rejected him confessed her crush on Oda from the basketball team. It wasn't until a girl named Haruko asked Hanamichi if he liked playing basketball that he replied yes, claiming to be quite the athlete. Sakuragi decided to join his high school's basketball team to try to get Haruko to like him, but Takenori Akagi, the team captain, is his brother and doesn't get along with him at first. The two even faced off in a game in which Akagi challenged Hanamichi to score at least one basket to win. Hanamichi succeeds and is proud of himself, as unlike everyone else, he's the only one who's managed to beat him despite his ignorance of the sport. There's also Rukawa, another rival, whom Haruko has a crush on. After a tough start on the team, Sakuragi manages to become one of the five most important players on the team. Throughout the series, we witness Sakuragi's character evolve from his role as a simple gang member to a true athlete. Hanamichi always manages to motivate his team to win the game at hand, and possesses a natural strength and talent that many admire. By the end of the manga, he has become Shohoku's catalyst and a star, mastering the long-range shot, the single shot, and especially rebounding. He also always comes out at the most opportune moment to prevent the opposing team from scoring. Nobunaga nicknames him "Red-Haired Monkey."
